First No-Till SOG Indoor Grow

I've been gardening for years with hydroponics and just recently decided to give no till a shot after seeing how cost effective it can be, especially if your looking at commercial applications. My last grow i went out and got two of Fluence Bioengineering's Spyder 2p lights, one of which i will be using over a Grassroots 4 x 4 living soil fabric bed. I recently was reading online about how people say starting seed in super soil is a bad idea because the soil is " too hot ", well it worked for me and i just used the soil mix on Buildasoil and Modern Cannabist website - right now 3/4 seeds have popped after a 24 hr soak in tap water.

Veg - T5 - Sunblaze Hight Output - 6 Lamp
Power consumption - 324 Watts

Lights - Flower
Spyder 2p - Power consumption (watts): 645
PPF: 1600 µmol/s


Modern Mix 2.0
  • Base Soil:
  • 2 CuFt Sphagnum moss
  • 1 CuFt Pumice
  • 1 CuFt lava rock
  • 1 CuFt Modern Beginning charged Biochar (thick pieces)
  • 1 CuFt Rice Hulls
  • 2 CuFt Humus composed of 1/3 Compost(Olly Mountain or Malibu Compost) and 2/3 EWC, and
  • If on hand throw in a few handfuls some probiotic herbs – comfrey, nettle, dandelion, etc..

This is going to be a learning experience, so please sit back and enjoy. The next watering in a day or so will be with homemade EM-1 ( Labs from kefir milk, all lactobacillus and yeast are equal, right? ) ill also be adding a good dosage of Great White Shark for a mycorrhizal presence.

Right now i'm trying to decide on going 1 or 4 plants per square foot, if i do the four plants ill train for just a single cola while 1 plant would have 3-6. Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences doing this? what will yields look like? 4 / sq ft at 22 grams each for 3 lbs or 1 /sq ft at 80 grams each for 3 lbs in a 4 x 4.

I would see 2.25-2.75 as an acceptable outcome for production.

The wood table is just a fill in while i get my flood tray cleaned. The goal here is to raise these pheno's to mother plant sizes in 5 gallon pots and then flower clones in the 4 x 4 bed.

Nice start. You gotta love BuildASoil. They are actually located about 1 1/2 hours from me, but I still get it online or have my hydro shop order the stuff for me. My hydro shop got me the 20 lb bag of rice hulls for like $18 and I didn't pay shipping. I've got a bunch of their stuff, and I really like the Craft Blend.
 
Thanks bro, I figure if your going to do something might as well do it right the first time. Yeah buildasoil is a great resource, especially for a first timer like me; the only downside I saw is that they can be more costly than their competitors like blackswallow or KIS Organics, especially if you look at shipping rates. I've been working on sourcing my materials locally, for me a 4-5cuft bag of rice hulls runs about $40+. Most of my ingredients run 20-40% more because of my geographical location. I'm actually glad you said something about their craft blend, I'm still trying to narrow down a a feeding schedule. I'm just using modern cannabist / builasoil feed schedule for the moment, but even they conflict on what and when to feed.

So far I plan on using blue heirloom corn and organic sprouting barley for teas. And I'm working on making my own compost, it's a slow rolling process there, I'm just not that motivated till I see the results.

Any recommendations for top dressing?

I have a ton of malted barley, neem meal, kelp meal, glacial rock dust, insect grass, gro kashi, Crustian meal and bio live, gypsum, basalt, oyster shell flower, calcium bentonite....

I see lots of conflicting info on what to top dress and how much.

I'm just beginning No-till, so I've just been top dressing with the Craft Blend, EWC or Build a Soil's Vermicompost, and I just started to add some rice hulls on top. I also do teas occasionally. I'm still using bottled nutes sometimes though (Earth Juice stuff). I will cut that out more when I learn how much Craft Blend to add to my soil, and when my soil gets more nutritious and has more magnesium in it. I trust that Build a Soil made a blend with all the right stuff, so that's all I'm using now. I don't trust myself enough to start adding individual amendments. My 12 pound bag is about out now, so it's time to order another, along with another bag of Vermicompost. I don't want to set up a worm bin yet so that's why I'm ordering theirs, and they have good shit. I think it said it was from Rocky Mountain Worm Farm or something, but I threw the bag away last night.

What is your strategy for watering and run-off? If and when you get run-off, is it just going onto the floor?

It's the hydro grower in me that says to make an automated watering system, but I'm still debating on hand watering since I'll only be watering about 20 gallons every couple days. In a couple paychecks I'll be getting a soil moisture monitor so I can see what strain is drinking more or If one side is drying faster. My biggest issue is humidity or the lack of it, average humidity is in the 30's-50's in spring/summer/fall and lower for winter. My room has to pull in fresh air for the furnace and water heater I imagine one half of the bed will dry faster than the rest.

If I do a water pump system I'll just turn on the water manually and let it run till almost dry and hand water the rest.

I'm just going let it run off onto the concrete, since concrete is porous it should just absorb into the ground.

Unless someone knows a reason it should be done differently

The living soil bed really kicked it into high gear after I watered last Thursday with 200x aloe flakes - a lot of the cover crop sprouted in the next 24 hours. I'm still trying to figure out when I need to water the big bed since there since there's only sprouts drinking. I'm just keeping the top moist for the cover crop and worms, I would hope my next watering is in the next 8-10 days ( from last Thursday ) but I don't know how to tell it needs water without digging a hole and feeling the moisture content.

Any thoughts from an experience living soil grower?

Do I let the top 1-2 inches dry out like normal soil with bottled nutes?

I've moved the T5 down to about 24" away from the seedlings and im dropping it each day till i get to 12". I had it too close and i think i burned a hole in the leaf due to a lensing effect from water. At least i think so. i haven't seen any pest yet.

The seedling leaves are showing some twisting which i'm going to assume is me over watering the little buggers - I'm still trying to figure out a nice moisture level for the solo cups and, just, living soil in general. Our VPD is way off and that is slowing the growth of the plants so i'm trying to get a humidifier for the room but i'm not sure how well its going to work; drawing in low humidity air from the outside is really killing me. I've left standing water in the room since it warm hoping that it would evaporate but i'm not having any luck there. I keep the tops of the solo cups moist ( it drys out a little bit )in order to promote microbe life even though the cups are little. Due to the twisting i'm going to let the lil guys dry more than i have been in hopes of correcting what i believe to be an over watering issue. I know, I know i still got that piece of plywood in the veg room - works been crazy busy ( I was traveling last week ) so its my goal this weekend to do the swap and get out and enjoy some of the last great days of summer. Here's a glimpse from the top of my world - one of the smaller ones actually lol.

I like to keep my t5's around 2" away from the canopy, but they have touched the lights too without any issues. T5's are not very intense. If it's really young I might not put them that close to start with, but I haven't had a problem yet with my t5's giving them too much light. Here's a pic to show how close I aim for. These girls are in my flower closet now getting ready for the switch.

hope it all goes well for you but serious you spent that much on the spyder 2p ??? that is a silly price if u ask me as i have seen very similar lights on the website im on for round 200-300 peace not 1600

you can also buy the led strips singal for round 12 bucks

Ideally you never want your notil bed to dry out. You want to keep it a consistent dampness.
Best way ive seen to do so is by using blumats or equivalent.

You dont want to water to run off
 
Well, well, here we are back at it again with a new update. It's now been 15 days from the start of the thread and we are really starting to develop some good greenery - each of the plants is now working on developing the 3rd and 4th node. Once we get a good solid 4th node ill look at FIM'ing each plant to promote a broader canopy to take clones from. Not too sure how much longer i want to leave them in the solo cups, they tend to dry out much quicker which would indicate that the root structure has really taken hold.

@Craigson - Thank you for the advice on when to water - its pretty much goes against everything i have been taught to keep the soil "moist." Either way its a learning experience and I always appreciate feedback.

Speaking of feedback, @rob333 , there's a few things that i have learned in life. First, i'm no engineer, and maybe you are, so going out and researching or looking for all the material components of leds, light spectrum, led diodes - their angle at which they are set, ect... is something i'm not qualified to do nor do i have the time in my day. Second, in life if you cannot do something for yourself be prepared to pay someone who can. After a little research I decided to place my trust in a lighting company. Good or bad, i have yet to find out. I can tell you that their customer service is extremely good and the quality of the product and warranty that i received on my light squashed any qualms i had with the price. Third, your grow is your own and as i stated earlier in the thread that this is a experiment for something much larger scale - like commercial production. If you want to go into business hand pick each part yourself more power to you, but id bet that the time you would spend trying to find and source materials for replacements would cost more in the long run that paying a respected company to do that for you. As a business owner i have to focus on the aspects that i specialize in and ill leave the rest up to qualified professionals. Not trying to be mean here, but how can you expect to go on someones thread and then dog them on how they spend their own money...doesn't make sense to me.

The 4x4 bed is coming along nicely, the cover crop is starting to take over and the bed is drying out a little less now that i have a layer of organic material to help stop the evaporation. I just watered the bed Friday night with 17 gallons and a few scoops of Great White Shark that i had left over. Unfortunately, it looks like i didn't make enough soil so my next goal is to make more. In the meantime it looks like ill be borrowing soil from the bed for 5 gallons pots. Not something that i wanted to do we will overcome, adapt, and survive.

The Living Soil Bed :

The 4x4 bed is coming along nicely, the cover crop is starting to take over and the bed is drying out a little less now that i have a layer of organic material to help stop the evaporation. I just watered the bed Friday night with 17 gallons and a few scoops of Great White Shark that i had left over. Unfortunately, it looks like i didn't make enough soil so my next goal is to make more. In the meantime it looks like ill be borrowing soil from the bed for 5 gallons pots. Not something that i wanted to do we will overcome, adapt, and survive.

I'm going to stay tuned for this grow, I like the way you do things , I will be a beginner also, I feel like this will be something great for me to follow
