First Grow in DIY Grow Box

Whats good all

Im starting a very small grow in my basement with a home made styrofoam grow box.
(about 1x1x3, just using it for sprouting before i move my babies into a bigger one).

I started germinating 2 AK seeds on the 1st, popped both in soil on 2nd (both successful :-P). The first seed broke ground on the 6th. I didnt get to them on the 7th, and the 8th the 2nd plant was taller than the first!

I have them in solo cups with potting soil under just 1 bout 40-50 watt CFL. I am gonna get more in there after i move them into a bigger box.

My questions so far :
How many lights should i be looking at for veg (2 plants, might just drop the weakest one by then?)
I have a 32 CFM fan i can hook up to circulate air, but would that be too strong for the sprouts?
Also, since the plants just broke ground, i didnt have any ventilation in there (:dunce:), what should i look at for venting?

I love any advice ! :leaf:

Alright i decided that since the plants will quickly outgrow their box, i have gutted a PC case, and Im gonna take up a PC Growbox Challenge! I have gutted it and lined it with aluminum foil, put some foam on the back side (there were alot of holes). I have a 3" fan where a normal CPU fan goes on a computer for added stealth.. hehehe...

My main problem is that i cant seem to find "Daylight" (6500k) lights anywhere!!! I found plant lights, but they were just blue tinted lights (to make plants look better... what a crock of s***...)
Where do you think i could find 'em? Theres a local Ace Hardware i havent checked yet. My little sprouts seem to be doin fine under one large (50W I think?) CFL with 3 settings, a low medium and high (I keep it on high [Brightest] for warmth). Im also gonna rig up a 27 watt light in addition to the 1st light when i move em to the PC Case.

Right now, i have passive air input (all the little holes on the side of the computer).

My "Filter" I was thinking like 5 dryer sheets folded in half and stapled together on the inside of the fan (So it pulls air through them).

If you couldnt tell, this was a low budget grow...

Still waiting for some advice from you experienced guys out there with knowledge to share!

Ok i realized that my PC case isnt gonna fit my lights:dunce: So i insulated a 15 gallon rubbermaid tub with styrofoam and installed my lights. Im gonna scrog it with these, so would you guys recommend that fencing you use for growing peas or a plastic fencing (you normally see orange fencing around like construction sites, I have it in black)?

And my question about passive intake versus another fan still stands...

I know you guys have seen this thread, lemme get some answers!

My camera should be here tommorow!

It seems passive intakes are the way to go with the smaller set-ups. Is there an open fan port in the front of your pc case? I used to have my to 80mm fans set with one blowing out the top back and the other an active intake in the bottom front. I switched the intake fan to another exhaust out the back. Temps went from 84 down to about 76 degrees.

I get most of my lights at Ace. You could probably have them order them for you. Can't wait to see it.

Hey thanks for stoppin in Simian, I loved (and/or AM loving lol) your grow journal (the one in your sig). Yea I stopped by my local Ace the other day and picked up a couple 20 watt (only size they had.. darn) 6500k CFLs so im vegging my lil babes under those until i finalize my new box

NEW BOX SPECS:
15 gallon rubbermaid tub/tote/thing...
2 20 watt 6500k CFLs, 1 20 watt 2700k CFL
3" AC Fan Out, passive 3"x3" intake
all insulated with styrofoam baby (thas how i roll)

Ill have pics tommorow, i got my camera (dirty lil coolpix lcd) but my friend forgot the charger shit (derp)..

My lil (hopefully) girls from some good AK i got (bagseed I know, I know, i'll get s*** for it if they end up being males). They are bout 3" tall each (8 days out of the ground). both have 2 large "true leaves" and more in developing (their first leaves [oval ones] are looking kinda droopy... might just be thirsty?)

Simian, what do you think on using Pea tenting versus that plastic fencing for my SCRoG?

Dont be shy to comment guys!

Today, I was wondering why my 2 week olds had gone from such explosive growth to absolutly none in the last 4 or 5 days. Maybe because they ate all the nutrients out of thier soil already? NO! I was pondering and pondering and it came upon me to transplant them. When I opened up thier solo cups, oh man were they rootlocked! Never make that mistake again... They are now in 8" or so pots. I hope to start some mild LST on them soon so I can flower them soon, they are AK47 which is sativa dominant and that means long flower time right? I dont want them to run out of room!

Still waiting for you other visitors to comment, we wont bite!

Ok! Today marks their 2 week birthday, and their first doses of nutrients! I added about 1/3 tablespoon of MG All Purpose (24-8-16) to 1 gallon of water. I also put a rack (like from a toaster) in their box today and they have only their top leaves poking out (one will grow into it within 2 days i say).

I noticed that there are some problems with their stems today. The one further from the intake is very weak, only supported by the rack right now. I will look for a good fan for circulation tomorrow.

Im worried that they are under developed though. They both have 3 leaves and are about 3 inches tall, they look like most peoples 3 or 4 day olds! What am I doing wrong judging by my reports?

I should have pics this week, I got the camera but there is a very strange output (to plug into my computer) and I have no cable to match it... Ill check radioshack when I look for the fan.

Tchuss!
