well it depends.
lumen per square foot is what u watch with cfl's
3000 per square foot is ur minimum requirement
cfl's dont have the best light propigation rate so mylar or mirrors are a must have

i use 3 for my veg/cloning box. fyi read a book on bonsai techniques, must have knowledge for a cfl grow
i have 8 on my flower box, roughly 3 sq/ft, at less than 1.5 ft of vegitative space. (area between top of pot and bottom of bulbs)
the bulbs come and go but roughly 4750 lumen per sq/ft

but with a cfl grow dont hold any dreams for a plant over 3 ft tall, unless u get ALOT of bulbs

prolly not necessary for your first grow in soil but y not those seeds were expensive hopefully your looking at this as a learning experience and your gonna need that meter when u step up and go hydro

I was always told that it is for bud swelling in flowering state. but i found a report somewhere online stating that the molasses can help put micro nutrients into the soil since it is a by product of decayed plant material. i dont believe it would harm a plant in veg for i have used it during veg when i didn't know any better. do some google searches and see what you come up with before trying it but again i used it in veg without any real ill effects... just my 2cents!!!

hope that helps
