First Grow - Bagseed (pics)

Start Date: 4/20/2008
Strain: Bagseed (unknown) ideas?
Soil: MG
Fertz: none (so far)
Soil PH: ~5.8 - 6.0
Lighting: Two 4' Fluorescent + Two 2' Fluorescent
Lumens: ~20k in 3x3 mylar covered "tent"

Being that this is my first grow I screwed up a lot. At first the plants were outside. I then moved them inside under two 4' fluorescent lights, this wasn't enough light and plants were growing slow. So I bought a 150 watt HPS and put them under that along with the 2 fluorescent lights. Found out that the HPS was just too hot and too close to the larger plants (it did wonders for the smaller ones though!) so I moved the HPS out. In place of the 150 HPS I put two 2' fluorescent lights. I only have a maximum height for the grow "tent" around 3'8" (about the size of a full grown hobbit) which kind of sucks so I have to use SOG method.

My plan is to clone all my plants that are in the veg tent and then put the clones under the 150 watt HPS in the flowering tent. As long as the clones don't get any taller then 12-14" I should have 2' to spare between the light and tops of the plants. If the light is still too hot i'll have to switch the bulb from a 150watt to a 70-100watt or so.

In the following pictures you see my first two plants I started with. They have a multitude of problems. I plan to just grab clones from them and then flower the clones. The picture of the three plants growing together is my second attempt. These three have never been moved, always under the same lights in the same place with the same soil. They seem to be doing better.

Day 49

Picture 1 = My veg room setup

Picture 2 = my tallest plant. As you can see it has some yellowing on the leaves, pretty sure its from when I had the HPS on it because the leaves that grew after I removed it seem to be OK.

Pictures 3,4,5,6 = my bushiest plant. Again you can see there is a level of fan leaves that have the yellow burn. Those above it seem to be better though.

Pictures 7,8 = Planted these a few weeks ago. Looking good so far.

Thats it so far. I'll keep you guys posted on how it goes! Let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions they are welcome!

Mint! Curious what kinda MG soil you used? I used just MG potting soil time release mixed with some really rich compost from outside...I had some burning up problems when I transplanted into that soil..flushed the shit out of them tho and they came back doing good after a few days.. Those are showing quite a bit of possible heat damage yes..but have you checked out the sick plants faq and all those guides in the plant problems section?

Im no expert but you may find a closer related answer to your leave problems here

I think the fact that they are 49 days old and havnt been fed any nutes might be your problem too..

check out this guide for some badass plant problem info:

International Cannagraphic Magazine Forums - The Complete guide to Sick Plants,pH, and Pest troubles!

My biggest problem right now is that I lost a few huge fan leaves to complete yellowing and brown necrotic spots. I have to try using some epsom salts cas I think its a magnesium problem. I watered with a tablespoon worth of miracle grow bloom booster per gallon of water 2 times now but its too soon to see if that has helped any with the feeding.. my plants are 31 days old..check out my grow journal in my signature.. Using bagseed just like you with a 70 watt hps..in a 1.5 x 2 grow area lined with mylar. Our grows have allot of similarities =0

I have a question. I want to stop my tall plant (picture #2) from growing any further in height. I have this stuff called "bushmaster" and the person from the hydro store I got it from said to use it whenever I want my plant to stop growing up and it will make it bush out. It has kelp extract. Right now I am weary to add anything to the MG soil other then distilled water.

What is the best way to stop it from gaining height? Top it? Any suggestions would rock!

Your clones are looking nice and healthy tho!

edit - My bad those are just new seedlings not clones eh?

Yeah man I figured there were other problems besides the heat stress. I was debating whether or not to add nutes yet (you get paranoid when you read this site watching all the nute burnage happen)...I might try a half strength solution and see how that goes. I am going to check out your journal now, sounds like we do have a similar grow op going!

Having to little of Potassium in your plants causes the plants leaves to show retarded growth and show a scorched tip and edges around the leaves.

Check the pics on that link under potassium..they look like your symptoms.

Update

Well today I took some clones! Two as a matter of fact. 1 from each of my two 50 day old plants (not sure how old the other 3 are, few weeks?).

Procedure: I took cuttings from the lower branches. I first snipped off the two lateral leaves leaving only a stem and 2-3 top leaves. I then immediately dipped it in cloning gel, swirled it around a little and then inserted it into the pre-soaked rapid rooter plug. I didnt stick the stem INTO the plug, just rested it inside, anyone know if this is the right thing to do? I didnt want to jam it in there, figured the cloning gel would rub off?

I then misted the clones, misted the plastic dome and placed the dome on top. The clones are under my lights now, hoping it all works out! Not sure how often to mist them so if anyone has any suggestions, I'm open!

I also bought some new soiless (containing 0 nutrients) medium to place my clones in once they take root. It's called EZ Coco (see picture) I plan on sticking my clones in this and keeping track of the nutrients myself from now until flowerage. I was going to take a pic of the clones but my battery died in digital camera :( I'll get some pics of them later.

EDIT: forgot to add, I topped my larger plant. I'll get pics later after my wife is in ZzZz land! 11PM : Ok I snapped a pic of the clones. I realized that the drooping clone is probably due to too many heavy leaves, I don't want to mess with it now by cutting them so I'll leave it and see what happens.

Also snapped a picture of my flowering chamber. Damn I cannot wait to use it, patience daniel son!

Just checked on my two clones (didn't get a pic yet, soon) and one of them is wilting. It's not shriveled just hanging over a little. I re-misted and put the top back on, just gonna leave em alone. Is it normal for them to wilt?

(pictures later tonight)

Clones

Checked the clones before work and the second clone was wilting and shriveling up a little. I cut more of the leaves off to relieve the plant of the weight and propped it up. The other clone was lookin' good. Re-misted them and went off for work. Got home from work and expected to see the wilting clone all shriveled and dead....but to my surprise it was standing straight up at attention! It bounced back, both clones are looking good now, I'm pretty stoked! Now, if only they are both females!!!!!

Mothers/Seedlings

The tall plant I topped the other day is looking pretty good, seems like there are two shoots comming out next to the shoot i snipped! I went ahead and topped my second plant as well. I also went ahead and pruned off all the burnt/dying leaves that I screwed up on when I had the HPS lamp too close.

Seedlings are looking good, kinda stretching because the lights are a bit high for them but I can't really lower the lights or else they will hit the two mothers. I dont care if any of the plants in the veg room stretch, their sole purpose is to produce clones for me to flower :)

So funny, I did all that same stuff last night.today. Last night i topped a few new shoots and today I pruned a shitload of crappy leaves to make room for light! Cant wait for your pics!

Haha too funny, we're on the same wavelength! Do you top all your shoots? I read you can top the top of your plant which then makes the plant focus on secondary growth. Then you can top the secondary growth etc. Is that what you do?

I won't have time to take pics tonight, I'll definitely get some tommorrow after work for ya though.

Are you doing this in stealth without the wife knowing?

I actually hadn't topped anything for a long while until last nite. The ones I topped last nite were the very small ones starting to form down below on the big stems. After LST there has been allot of little leaves popping out of the stems so thats where I topped..I only did maybe 2 or so.

Today however I went to my other plant and topped the tallest 2 branches in hopes that those 2 will each split into 2 forming 4 top colas as well as the ones that have already been topped weeks ago..haha it seems complicated to explain but simply put, I just randomly decided to top the tallest 2.

You can top like 24313241234 times as far as I know as long as you wait for the ones you topped to grow big enuff to start forming their own sets of new leaves. Then you top them again. So in essence its like a "Y" then on top of the "Y" forms 2 more "Y" and then ontop of those 2 "Y" more "Y" can be formed haha..

Heres a crude ass diagram I drew up.

Ah ha. Thats drawing helps a lot. Thats pretty much what I thought, each top (if done right) splits into two. I got some pics of my two plants I topped and you can see the two sprouts comming up on either side!

Also after adding some nutrients (7-4-9) on monday the plants look much better! The burned leaves are still burned (or pruned) but all the other leaves got nice and green.

I also snapped some pics of the clones. They look good, still alive!

Also got a cool looking picture of the top of my tall plant, the leaves make a circle hehe, check it out its triiippppy maaan
The last picture is of my excel chart that I use to keep track of everything cause it seems I have a hard time remebering stuff for some weird reason lol. I'm actually writing a program now (VB.NET) to help keep track of it instead of an excel sheet. Through the program I'll be able to sort through the watering, pruning, cloning and planting dates easier. The program will enable you to click a button like say "water" and (based on the data you enter daily) it'll pull up the last time you've watered, or how old each of your plants are, how many clones you've taken, and what the clone survival / death rate is. It'll be fun! I paste pics of it when its finished. Just did the GUI today, should finish it tommorrow.

I also bought an "Ionic Pro" ionic air purifier today. I plan on flowering the two big plants after taking 2 more clones each from them. So I want to be prepared to keep that smell down as much as possible. I'm testing it right now, just smoked up in this room and came back in and I don't smell a thing! nuckin' futs!

Update : 6.16.2008

Finished up the construction of my flowering room. Now has proper exhaust and two fans, 1 for the plants the other blowing the hot air from the HPS into the exhaust.

Decided to start flowering because there is no point in doing all the work to get the plants to grow if they are males. The two clones from each plant are healthy and soon to be planted into a normal pot. So if either of my two larger plants are females I'll have it cloned. If hey are males, well, they shall feel my wrath!

I'll snap some pics when I start seeing some signs of sex. Booow-chick-a-wow-wow.

Right on for the construction of the box!

Cant wait for them pics!

and also props on the whole creating your own program for watering n the likes, thats pretty nifty. +REP! Thanks for the comments on my journal!

P.S The topping looks like you did it correct. My first top shows soooo much in one of my plants...its like 2 huge towers that Im praying turn into 2 huge colas as well as all the others.

Yeah thanks for the guidance on the topping. That is what I want too, two nice fat cola's!!!

Here is a screen of the program I wrote. If anyone should want to use it let me know and I'll send it to you. I know people are paranoid about sharing executables over the internet so to make you feel better I'll even send you the source code if you know anything about programming you can check it out and compile for yourself - Hell, even make it better and send it back to me !!!
