First Time Cfl Grow

Hey my name is Myles, this is my first cfl grow. I am planning to grow one or two Lowryder#2 plants under one 105w cfl 2700k on a 18/6 lights cycle through the whole grow. idk what kind of soil to use i cant order anything on the internet like fox farm or anything. The only thing i can probably get from lowes is miracle grow perlite, and peatmoss, but they dont have any nutes. They do have miracle grow seed starting tho. Im growing in a tall cabinet seperated by two parts. ill be growing in the top part. I have one pc fan i think its 80mm. well i think that wraps it up if you have any questions on any of my setup plz tell me. This is my first grow so it might not be as good as everybody else that has experience. tell me what soil to use plz, and if i can grow these two plants with what light/s i have. Also i need some lamp holders like the ones you screw regular old lightbulbs into. Plz post links to where i can get these items.

Thanks, Myles

Hey Myles,

Don't stress on the soil, that's really easy. There is a lot of marketing and hype as to what soil is the best. You definitely have your fanboys, just like with computers or gaming systems. I've used Miracle Grow Organic, Miracle Grow Water Control (the kind everyone says to avoid), Peat Moss, Kellogg, and SuperSoil and I really can't tell the different.

I gotten weeds & mushrooms in the kellogg mix, but never in the MG or SuperSoil. I didn't mind the mushrooms in the kellogg soil at all because they attract lots of good little organisms. The weeds really aren't that big of a deal either since I usually spot them the same day they came up. If your doing a guerilla grow (which I'm personally against) then weeds could be a problem.

And while I've never gotten weeds in MG, I did get bugs in the Organic mix. Luckily for me, they went away in a week without me doing anything -- some people aren't so luck and have to spray.

If you read the back of the bags you'll realize that most companies are all using pretty much the same stuff: peat moss, composted bark, stray/hay, and a fertilizer.

MG uses paltry, which is hot, but contains more nitrogen. That's because birds have pee in their shit. And because of this you do have to be a little careful. Just like how bird piss can burn your car's paint, it can also burn your seedlings. The same is true of horse manure. However, a real simple fix is to flush the soil a few days before you sow.

Again, once you know what the soil is made of, it gets pretty easy come checkout time. Oh and if you want to try a soiless mix, you can get the jiffy peat pellets, break them up, and throw away the mesh.

105w wont be enough for two plants .
as for the spectrum of the light , i hope u realise that it is NOT ideal for the veg phase . altho it will due the job , but not as effectivly as a 6500k (cold white)
bulb would do.

u should also think about ventilation , if ur keeping that cabinet sealed u need to let the heat go out .
so i suggest u add another pc fan as a exauhst , place it at the hight of the lights and ofcuz drill some holes so it will blow the air out of the cabinet .

u dont have to , but its a suggestion , u can easily improve ur lights if ull have some reflection at the walls . either cover it up with mylar
or paint it white .

and last but surely not least , try and search this forum for answers . belive me ull find ur answers .
and good luck with your grow !

When i put the 105w 2700k cfl bulb in there it kind of hangs and idk how to keep it straight and upright can anyone help me?

What are the incandescent bulbs for? To the best or my knowledge they don't output nearly enough lumens for the plant to even notice the bulb being there. Just making extra heat and energy consumption. Happy growing man good luck!!

nice bro...i would paint the inside flat white help with reflection... also get some thin weather stirpping should help with some of the light lose around the doors cost like $3 @ wal mart...check out my grow used it around my doors...

they were just for testing out if the sockets worked and they were properly wired so i didnt bust mercury all over my grow box when i hooked up my cfl.
