So what is the difference between FIMming and topping your plant. Is one better than the other? what are the positives and negatives in comparison to topping? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I just have never heard of this concept b4.

The only thing I know that is worse about FIMing is that it takes a longer time for a plant to recover from it. Fimming technically is topping you plant, but in a different way

what this is showing is that you don't cut all the way down to the node, you cut around the top of petioles(leaf stems) so you can get anywhere from 3-8 colas.

Thanks for that Mondaypurp. That cleared it up a lot. Very informational

I usually FIM cause I don't mind waiting for my bud, but if you're in more of a rush, I'd just top or not even prune them at all.

How risky is topping like this? Is it easy to mess up and kill your friend? And is it okay to do this as early as the first or second node?

when everyone fim's do you all just cut the leaves right with it?? i tried to seperate the new fragile leaves in hopes of saving them it worked on 3/4 and on the 4th i accidentally killed a leaf i fim'ed like 5 years ago and i dont remember if i just cut my leaves or not all i know is fim'ing is the way to go! you get much more bud in the long run if its done right

that explains it all nice1!:bigjoint::leaf:

i just cut right across the little bud like growth of leaves at the top. it would be a good idea to spread them and find the way way middle growth and just pluck that little guy. this will do the same thing as fiming but with better results and less streas.

if all the dashes are the spread leaves at the top, the # is the smallest newest growth node you can find, thats what you pluck, this will concentrate growth onto the branches that are forming below it, creating a good deal of top cola branches.

you dont have to do anythin ! ! ! read or search?
how can a place that gives me so much joy get me so frustrated . .
the first time i tried to top i missed , tho not as FIM recommends , she still came back with hella more growth.
giv it a go

if you dont top it will just grow naturaly with one big cola at the top, fiming is making it so there is more than one top cola. it perty much makes the lower branches compeat for top spot, making alot of tops, and more big budds.

Thank you for being human....

The only real disadvatage to fim'ing is that your plant will be slightly stunned for a few days. Also if your not concerned about quanity at all, dont care if you only have one true top, or you just really really want a big main cola(some strains have massive single colas) then maybe its not worth the work or time...
i have to admit tho my buddy was jealous of my plants my two bagseed plants(mostly indica) had more than double the bud on each one than his NL#5xbigbud(nirvana) girl that was left alone and formed a single cola, whats even more interesting is these 3 plants were all under the same 400W HPS, the NLxBB got much taller than the bagseed plants and sort of robbed them of light since the light had to be raised because of the NLxBB but the bagseed plants that were fim'ed had tons of tops and had much much more bud on them makes me think twice about big bud too
