Well... You can use a duct muffler, and the ducting should be insulated, this helps.... you could put a speed controller and slow it down... but don't use the cheap hydro controllers get a variac (variable auto transformer)... Some people hang them by bungee cords so there is not vibration on walls and beams.... I always go larger than I need and slow it down.. it helps alot...

Box it. There are two ways to go about this. The first option is to build a box that will just barely fit the fan, bolt or screw in fan to bottom plate, cut the holes needed on each side and connect whatever ducting you will be using, seal it up around where the ducting and box meet so it's best to cut holes the exact size of your ducting or larger if it is insulated ducting which is best for soundproofing, wrap the fan in saran wrap then use a crack fill aerosol can(not a times x4 expanding but the crack fill kind x2-3 expansion) and fill it up as best you can so the fan is completely or almost completely covered, let dry and seal the top plate on. Done. You just have to remember to drill a hole for the power and speed control cords. Hang it from something in the attic with bungee cords or the racket ropes sold to hang carbon filters.

Second option is the same thing except you build a big box(anywhere from 4-10 times the size of your fan) and connect your ducting and seal the holes you cut the same way, but instead of using filler spray you just pack old clothing and insulation in there.

I've seen both types and have done the small box option before for a friend and when using insulated ducting it quiets the fan by more than 50%.

Cheaper and quieter than any duct muffler. Must hang it though to deaden vibrations which is what sound basically is.

Toss that cheapo fan and buy a quality fan. There is a reason people shell out triple or quadruple what Valuline costs. I have to touch my Elicent (I think they are called CFM too) to check if it's on.

if your really stuck you could just wrap a blanket around it, it's what i had to do with mine until i can replace it for something quieter, hung with bungee cords and wrapped in a double blanket folded so it's just wrapped around the fan has cut the noise in half by atleast 50%, you could hear mine down at the front door now you need it to be perfectly silent and be stood very close to hear it, mines also in my attic mate

also pulling your ducting tight helps because the air travelling over the ribs creates a bit of noise i like insulated ducting myself, but if you pull your ducting tight and keep it as straight as possible will also help

Thanks for the replies, if i had known that insulated ducting was better i would have used that. Rite now my fans kicking in for 1 minute every 3 And sounds like a space ship! Haha . I have two of these fans and i dont really want to buy new ones. Im going to try that small box idea and see how that goes . Also mine is screw nailed to a beam im going to replace with bungie cords

It's cause it's mounted to the house frame. I did that and you could hear it through the entire house. Now I have it in a cardboard box with a pillow underneath it sitting on the floor. It's very quiet now.

speedster fan speed controller.
CAP also makes a speed controller.
They get a lot quieter on half speed.

Or upgrade to a 8" and run on low if you need all 400CFM of the 6" fan.

Or just buy a better quality fan

I have a cap speed controller but i need that for my fan for my lights because it doesnt need to be boooooming all the time. Does anybody have any inovations for that box idea ? Im probbaly going to use expanding foam or insulation.

still think (I) that buying a new fan is the stellar idea. Everybody buys shit shit once in a while and they get stuck with it because of poor (uninformed) choice making. Little fan and big CFM means loud noise, plus did you mount it directly to the frame of your house without dampening? anyway, 6 inch is way small... go 12 and spend money and never look back. 70 percent softer sound, and CFM doesn't have to suffer. Buy the big fan. BUY IT! just 200 dollars into the pooper. Look at how the smartest individuals in the world at the United States Fed. have built up a massive 16 trillion dollar government debt! You will just suffer a small hit when you throw away that little turbine and get a real 12 inch beast with a nice exterior shroud
