im gonna keep this short and to the point...This is my third grow and my last two smoked ok but didn't smell like weed, it had a earthy soil like smell but when I squeezed the buds I got a whiff of "skunk" but only on the inside buds. Now this is my 3rd harvest and I trimmed and dried for 3 days until the outer part of the buds were dry and then put them in a mason jar... But it still doesn't smell like weed... I mean this has a little bit more of a skunk smell then my last two but it smells like cinnamon and hay but on the inner part of the bud it smells like good bud ... What do I do? Is this normal and how do I get that " skunk " smell out of the center.. And the buds are very very fluffy will they start to get more solid as they cure or did I just screw this up.. Here's some pics of he buds

If you have them stabilized @ 60-65% humidity they will not get denser unless they have some drying to do.

The "good" smells seem to come out better after a couple months in the jar.

If you are just wanting to smell your bud, sniff away, but the proof is when you stick the Bic to it.

A less than fragrant taste is soon overlooked by those staring at the ceiling fan going round and round and round.

I mean your deffinetly right and I agree ... But you can smoke buds and get the benefit As long as it will burn ? Of course I dried them out the correct way Even with the earthy smell ... Because I thought you needed to wait for the chlorophyll to break down that's the reason for the mason jars... And btw RH is about 45% and all my buds firmed up and came together

Depending on where you are from they usually take 4-7 days to dry. 3 is duable as long as your diligent in opening and burping the jars if its 3 days burp 2wice a day untill its totally dry.
Also take the buds out and let them breathe.
Also did you use a fan to dry? cus 3 days is pretty fast dry.

3 days wouldn't b a proper dry even for airy bud. 5 days with a fan in the room is still a premature dry phase for dense bud. If the stems don't snap and hang then the bud is still holding chemical filled moisture. With a 3 day dry phase you will b in for a long nailbiting cure . The terpenes r definitely there to develop if you can smell skunk from a broken nug . The trick is slow drying . You really don't wanna jar em too quick these practices produce some serious mold if not burped religiously and a hay taste and smell that may take months to cure away. Never jar wet weed that is a huge nono

Trim looks good on those nugs. I get the best smell i find by cutting the whole plant and hanging it whole. The leaves seem to envelop the buds and "catch" the smell in the buds as it dries. I find my wet trims havent got much smell. Theres also a lot of guys who put faith in loading up on the sugars at the end of flower to coax out some smells, or running high brix throughout.
Ive personally also harvested early and had weak and "hay" like flavours. Some food for thought. Good luck.

that's exactly what I did I I think people are getting it all Mixed up the way I worded my post... First I Cut the plant whole let it hang upside down I didn't even trim the fan leaves let it hang upside down for three whole days in a dark wooden pine cabinet with a relative humidity of 45% after the third day I trim all fan leaves and like Alienwidow posts the fan leaves do wrap around the buds and once I can snap the stems clear off without bending I then trim all leaves down to buds and place in a water strainer for 2 hours with a air circulator in the same pine cabinet then I jar for a week or two ... But this is my first photoperiod so I'm starting to smell skunk in the jar now ... Autofems were a lot different ( much much much smaller )

Sounds like you caught on to the cure now....
Just keep popping that jar 2x's a day...if its you pop it early on and its still wet , just let the buds lay out for a few hours then jar em back up. GL

You need light and a lot more of it during flower first. Loose buds is too little light and probably too much heat. Are you sure you are chopping when the plant has maxed and not too soon?

Let it dry out more before throwing in a jar, imo your trapping chloryphll. Some strain like to be burped with a lil moisture, some do not. I have a fire og thats dank soon as it dries, but my skywalker takes two weeks to get that fresh leaf smell out of it. GL

My temps n
How hot did your set up get with lights on?
Never got over 83 usually 70-77 and it was grown under a 400 w digital ballast lighting fixture and I had air circulation in my room... Buds firmed up and the amount of space in my jar is decreasing ( as moisture escapes during burping) ... So that's not the problem ... It looks good smokes ok a bit harsh but it still needs a few more days in the jar so that should mellow out... It's just the smell that's bothering me

I've had great results with the following procedure:

Slow dry in a dark, cool area with ~60% RH, no direct air current blasting the buds, but good air exchange. Usually about a week until they're ready for cure. I like to jar them before the stems snap, but as said above you gotta be on the ball with burping the jars. Boveda packs are a popular way to control jar humidity, but I've never felt it necessary to use them. Make sure when you burp, you "stir" or shuffle the jar a bit. I prefer a short-interval burp because it doesn't take more than a couple hours for moisture to redistribute and ready to be burped again. Curing is an extension of the drying process in the way that when you cure, youre goal is to break down and release as much chlorophyll as possible without molding the buds. So you dehydrate, rehydrate, and repeat. Properly dried/cured buds should lose some of the green color, break apart evenly in your fingers, and retain a consistent smell inside and out. Also should be smooth, thick smoke that leaves fluffy white ashes. Sorry, I know a lot of this is repeat info but this is exactly what I do and the results are pretty satisfying.

Welp, sounds like you did that part pretty well. The only thing left then is a good cure to try and pull out some of those smells. And you never know, they may never come if you harvested early. If you did gowever harvest at the proper ripeness you may just have a plant that doesnt smell super strong. When searching for a dream strain usually youll go through a couple duds before you get to the "golden goat" hahahahaa.
In terms of curing ive run strains that smell like hay, or grass, when they come off. Usually a couple weeks to a couple months later theyre good to go with only a slight off smell remaining. Ive also run strains that smell so strong that when they come down and hang for fiveish days, and then go straight to gallon bags, are ready to move eight days after harvest with a great smell. (Personally i think i get the strongest effect from fresh cut vs. cured for two months anyway)
The other thing you can do is that sugar thing i was saying earlier...oooor theres always products like terpenator, or snow storm by humbolt, that ive seen do some amazing things after applied. They bring out the goo pretty good. The more resin production you have the stronger they smell usually. Good luck on the next run man, and if the clones from that photo still smell like hay you may have gotten a bad pheno type of it. Just grab some new genetics and fire back up with something new, preferably a clone from someone whos already sexed it and found a super dank pheno. Cheers.

Thanks a lot man super helpful... Now that it's dried properly and its been in the jar for 48 hours burping accordingly , the smell is changing ... Like if I hold the jar at arms length I get a wig of that Skunky smell but then when I smell it directly in the jar I still get that earthy cinnamon smell... I just think my patience are getting the best of me and I'm anxious lol ... The more it cures in the jar the more the smell changes... And if I squeeze a bud and smell it , it smells very good and super citrusy

Hey I liked the information you have shared in this thread, it is very accurate. Let me ask you this I have actually been experimenting with adding extra sugars the last 2 weeks before harvest. I have a friend that does this and his buds always come out super frosty and delicious (all different strains). Im curious if you have actually done this or do you know of anyone who does this. If so what product do you/they use and how often do you add sugars before the final harvest?

It's been a little over two weeks now and the smell has not changed ... Same conditions In a glass airtight jar burping everyday... Still just doesn't have that smell ... But when I squeeze the buds it smells skunky ... I took the buds out of the jar and into a plastic bag ...slight moisture in the middle still but I came home the other night and there was a little bud on my floor that I guess I had dropped and missed and when I picked it up it actually had that citrusy skunk smell to it so I know that my bud is able to do it I just don't know how to draw out that smell so that's why put it from the jar into the plastic bag hoping to dry it out even more maybe I just need to dry it a little bit more cause the bud that I found on the floor was very very dry but also very smelly ... And here's some tricomb pics I took if the bud under 100x mag tell me if it looks like I might of chopped too early
