I love to conduct experiments. I will take 2 plants that are just about exactly alike, twins for all intensive purposes and keep a journal of the results of the experiments. One plant will be the control plant that I do nothing differently with. The other twin plant is the plant I conduct my experiments and research on. I've done this over and over with different experiments.
one plant was grown natural, the twin was "pinched" to create 2 tops then 1 week later the 2 tops were pinched to create 4 a week later the 4 pinched creating 8, a week later the 8 pinched creating 16. I also learned the "ART" of "BENDING". Bending is just using index finger and thumb to gently bend a branch to the side away from the center. I conducted this experiment over 25 years ago. The control plant yielded a 129 grams, the experimental pinched and bent plant produced 507 grams. I have never allowed a plant to just grow without pinching and bending again.
I've done experiments like using molasses, which I highly recommend.
Cutting clones, I found that watering the mother and taking the cuttings 20 minutes later made those clones much hardier after the 3rdor 4th day and they rooted faster. I had tried not watering the mother and placing the cutting directly into Olivia's cloning solution which I thought would work better thinking that the clone would draw the cloning solution faster for better results but my many experiments proved otherwise.
Whenever your not sure of something or trying something new its wise to do a recorded controlled experiment on a small group than to take a chance with the whole crop.
As far as the "pinch and Bend method" goes, I had friends that refused to do it because they liked the big thick central cola Northern Lights can produce. I like big colas also BUT I like lots of weed more than I like looking at an impressive cola. If we were competing in a beauty contest the big cola wins, she'd get my vote, BUT I'm not entering my harvest in a beauty pagent.
I've tried to explain this to one of my friends but it just didn't compute for some reason. The conversation went like this. "You like the big central cola right? and they say YUP! Okay but what do you do with it? They reply "smoke it". "All at once?" I ask. NO! they reply. "So what do you do?" I ask. ""I break off buds and smoke them" They reply. "AH HA!" I remark, "So in the long run you break up that cola into smaller amounts and smoke it right?" "OF Course" they say in a sarcastic tone as if I'm an idiot. Let me show you something I say and I break out a pound of big buds. I open up a pound and take out some big bus and tell my buddy to build one of his colas. He just looks at me so I start stacking buds together. Hegets the idea of what I'm doing and takes over. he lays out what looks like a big cola. I ask him to make it a little bigger than the best one he grew, which he does. I tell him to take more buds and basically recreate his best plant on the table which he does. Then I ask him if this is about equal to his best plant and he says yes. I throw it on the scale and it weighs 135 grams, just over a 1/4 pound. Then I ask him if he would trade the re-creation of his best plant with the buds he just layed out for his plant and he says "NO WAY!" Then I ask him if he would trade his best plant for the re-creation of it he just made PLUS the rest of the pound. "WHY?" he asks me. I tell him because each one of my plant yielded over a pound and because "He likes the big central Cola he's screwing himself out of 3/4 of a pound more. He just looks at me with a stunned look. I ask him "Next year are you going to let me teach you how to do the "Pinch and Bend Method?" Probably Not, I like those big central colas!" he says. "AHHHHHHHHH!" I say, "Why do I waste my breath on you!"
The above story is a story about a person who is Unteachable, therefore Unreachable! Some people are just plain stubborn, facts don't matter because their problem isn't with the facts, its with their emotions. Emotion is not logical, therefore no amount of evidence will convince someone who is unteachable, they remain unteachable for some strange emotion reason and nobody can fix it.
The above story is about an old friend who is an "ASKHOLE" An ASKHOLE is a person who will ask for your advice and after you've given it will do the exact opposite. I'm sure everyone has run into an askhole before and they are some frustrating people.
I've gone off the rails again, Experiments, do plenty of experiments and record your findings. Its amazing at how fast small details get forgotten from one season to the next.
