Experimental use with an Air stone

What would happen if one were to place an air stone at the bottom of a regular soil medium? If at all beneficial, what would be the best way to include it? My grow setup is going to include a reservoir of water under stones to keep humidity high in my grow space, so I have a few options when it comes to placement.

My thoughts were..

-I could bury the stone an inch up from the bottom of the pot in soil. I've been reading that plants really like having aerated soil, so would this not improve conditions?

-An alternative could be.. setting the pot in my water reservoir before adding the stones so that the water level rises into the bottom of the pot (much like a hydro setup) and I could have the air stone in the water underneath.

Totally retarded ideas?

I wouldn't suggest this at all. To anyone. At all....

Your ideas aren't exactly retarded or stupid ones.. but.. again with any experimental methods of growing, you won't know the outcome unless you try it.

But again, if it were me?? I might wait and try this on a male plant.. I wouldn't want to end up killing or destroying a female plant over this though.. that's for sure.

Give it a shot man, nobody will know for sure unless someone tries it ya dig?

In another example, this goes into the whole subject and idea of having "warning" labels on things. Usually, people won't post warning labels, or "caution" labels on things.. unless someone has already tried or gotten hurt from doing whatever it is that they did in the first place you know?

hope that made sense.. I haven't had my morning bowl of bud yet.. so bare with me.

IMO, you should be the first one to try this... and post updates with pics showing how the experiment is going. Never know, it might work.

I highly doubt it though. But nobody will know until someone tries it for the first time...

so good luck to ya dude.

peace

perlite can do the aerating of your soil just fine just mix it in and it creates air pockets for the roots as well as pockets for moisture to hide.

Is there any particular part of the idea that seems detrimental to the growing process? Would the soil dry out super fast?

maybe you could fill the bottom half with hydroton (those clay ball things) and bury air stones in between them use like 4 4'' stone I think there would be enough space for air bubbles the travel in between the hydroton then drill like 6 1/4'' holes around the perimeter of the bucket below the level that your soil starts at so air can escape only thing would be to bottom water so you aren't pushing your soil into your hydroton and since soil wicks moisture it wouldn't be a real issue. I've though about doing something like this before

OP: I've thought about doing this many times before. And my thinking was along the same lines as yours! I couldn't see anything BAD coming from this/ I mean all it is, is MORE oxygen!

Ganjaluvr, this is not to dog on you what so ever. I'm just curious. Why would you "Not suggest this at all. To anyone. At all."? You say you wouldn't want to end up killing a femal plant over this. Why exactly would you think this might kill a plant in the first place? I mean really all it is, is a piece of plastic with holes in it just pushing more air to the roots. I, personally, think it is a great idea but have yet to try it! You should give it a go IMO!

Instead of doing this, I decided that for my current grow I'm going to be trying air-root-pruning... I don't know if you've read about it at all. But it's basically having a whole bunch of holes in your pot for the roots to grow out of, then the tips die off and more roots grow into the soil instead of spiraling around the bottom of the pot ect. It dries out the soil faster so you have to water more therefore more nutrient uptake. I dunno, it seems to be going REALLY well ATM. But the girls are only about 2 weeks into flower thus far so we'll see I guess.

The basket in this pic (ONLY THE BASKET) is what I'm using for my pots for my plants. The root tips grow out the holes then die off. I'm not sure where the thread is, but there's one around here on air-root-pruning and it's supposed to just have a healthier plant in general. Guess we'll see. When I bought these pots the lady told me if I plant a regualr plant in soil in there (because it's made for aquatic plants in ponds, ect) That my plant won't live and it'll just die off.......... Well I'll tell you, she was WRONG! haha

lol some people are just more concerned with sounding right, than being right. Thanks for all the great info, I think the air-pruning idea is really interesting and I might check that out next time if it works out for you. The idea behind it sounds pretty legit! Good find :]

One possible horror scenario:
CO2 enters the intake of the airpump and suffocates the roots in the pot. Keep your CO2 system away from the airpump!

Besides that and the previously mentioned possibility of burning out the pump, I see no reason why that wouldn't work.

As for what was suggested earlier, adding an aerating element to the soil would probably do just as good. Perlite or Coco or w/e.

TOTALLY WORKS. better for your plants than anything you could possibly try. you can use a small, really small container like a gallon for a huge plant. i have one in a half gallone and it is about 3' tall already. grew to that size twice as fast. because of the one in the small container did so well, im trying it on a plant in a 5 gallon bucket with even more air. yes, you have to keep it moist. you can almost dry it out completely, but water them as they start limping. no need to over water but no danger in it. i just found it grows best getting it almost dry before adding more water. use WAY less nutes. i read so many articles relating to this and no one said anything positive about it. but just in case there is someone out there that is considering this then by all means, dont hesitate another day, you will be extremely happy.

just to back up what i said, there is a pot that was recently. doesnt use an airstone, just a hose that splits into four. the video on youtube claims 130% faster growth and i fully agree. just youtube airdome. and if anyone out there does try this, please respond and let me know how it goes because almost everyone is saying its a retarded idea when its one of the best things EVER for your plant.

I'm did it and Im in 3 weeks after flip and it's have trichomes......my little secret in organic soil!

I have AutoPots with the air dome, the round XL with the round disc (extra cost) using soil. I also use a 50/50 soil perlite mix, however, the air dome makes a significant difference, the plant thrives with the air flow on the roots. I am sure one could devise something similar with an air stone.....try it
