Exhaust Fan Question

Hi Everyone,

I have been lurking this forum for weeks learning and adjusting my setup, excellent information here.

Here is my question...I am at the point I will need to add an exhaust fan to maintain a lower temperature and draw in fresh air. I would like to add some sort of smell control as well. I am having a hard time figuring out or deciding a few things and thought I may get some superb advice here.

Here are a few things about my setup:
  • Room size: 2'x4.5'x6'
  • light: 400w HPS
  • plants: 6

What I need help with, please keep on mind it's going to be hard to convince the wife to spend anymore money so I am on a limited budget.

  • What type of fan will be quiet and economical?
  • How do you figure the correct CFM fan to purchase?
  • Same with the inlet an outlet diameter?
  • What size filter
  • What type of filter when on a budget. (however I did read the post how to make your own and I will most likely do that)

Thank you in advance!

a 4 inch inline exhaust fan and the cheapest carbon filter you can find on amazon (not sure if you're growing in a tent or closet) Assuming you're in a closet you'll need a hole of some sort to bring in fresh air and the inline to circulate everything, attach your inline to the carbon filter.

Plus i'm about half shit faced so I might have read your question wrong, i guess the size of your inline fan depends on how hot it gets where you live...

As far as fans you can go to Home Depot and get a rotating fan for under $9.00, if you go to eBay you can get computer fans with 23cfm's for a dollar a piece with free shipping( assuming you can wire them to a ac/dc adapter). A exhaust fan like .. a bathroom exhaust fan is around $15.00, does take some wiring and some mild construction work. You go to Target a get a three speed rotating fan/deodorizer/ionizer for around $70.00. All could/would work, do you have other lights planned? Is the HPS for your flowering light? Are you adding supplemental lights like T5 HO or CFL's ? That seems like a good size room for most varieties. I use a 26X46X72 room for 5 plants, but have over 1000 watts(CFL/MH/HPS/T5) and a temperature range of 73@ nite and 80 for day, with a humidity of around 40.

Yes this HPS is for flowering and no I will not be acquiring another light for flowering.
Temperature hits around 93 during the day if I keep my grow closet closed...yes it will get hotter. Humidity is below 50% all the time.
Currently I have one 10" tornado style fan cooling the light in a homemade manner and i have (2) 6" fans circulating the air around the plants. I also have a 4" vent that I already made for an exhaust and one for intake. Just need to figure out the proper CFM's to cool this room.
CO2 is not an option because of budget, I also wanted to control the smell as well. So I figured filter + fan would be my best option to accommodation the smell and the temperature.
