I prefer to work out at home, I found it cheaper than a gym however if you have the money and would prefer a gym do it, i believe memberships can be from 40$ (like a ymca ) to about 150 $ (goodlife)
personal trainers can be a good thing but make sure you get someone who actually cares and knows about their job.

To know what you wanna start with you have to tell us what oyu want
do you want weightloss? do you want muscle ? do you want to be able to run 5k?
are you male or female?

I would say you would need to do cardio for weight loss, and resistance to tone, and than SOME muscle building like weights ect, but dont focus on that too much too soon,

All you really need to do is figure out if you wanna do the gym or a home,
Everyone learns and works differently , some people can hop on a treadmill, while others need help from a personal trainer to motivate them, some people work better by going to classes such as yoga, spin classes, ect , and some people work better at home,
If you lack self motivation I would suggest classes, or personal trainers you really just have to work yourself and constantly get yourself to work out.
I prefer home work outs because i can easily do them whenever I please, be it 6am or 10pm. I dont have to get dressed up, and I dont need to leave the home. I would suggest if youre completely unhappy with yourself and self consious but still prefer a gym to go to a All Female fitness gym, where you can feel more at ease

Thanks. I'm not self conscious. I figure I earned every wrinkle and scar ;) I'm just completely out to sea on this. For example you say cardio (I understand), then resistance and muscle building? Doesn't resistance build muscles? Hmm seems like I need a working our for dummies book!

Thanks,

Have you looked into Pilates?
Other than that, I remember when I was young, walking up and down this long hill going to school every day was good on my legs and ass.
I think the downhill direction was the rear end improving direction.

if you want to loose weight , it is not only exercising but diet, my aunt is a personal trainer, she told me you need to do AT LEAST/MINIMUM of 5 work outs a week, up to 60 mins each work out and you have to work hard enough to sweat,
so sitting on an elliptical for 60 mins isnt going to cause you to loose weight

personally i found that it was self motivation. once i got motivated enough i started just basic stuff. walking, jogging, lifting glass jars with water (i dont have weights), push ups and sit ups. its been a little over a month and ive seen progress.

A cousin of mine really need to make a major life style change. She developed two major health conditions related excess weight and was also suffering with other minor ailment as well. Basically, the doctor told her she wasn't going to live to see fifty if she didn't drop 150lbs. She started her quest by first having lap-band surgery done. Once she was cleared for exercise, she started walking 60 min a day...sometimes on a TREADMILL (for UB) but mostly outside. She also really enjoys water aerobics. She found with water aerobics it addressed all of what she was looking for, fat loss, endurance, building muscle and toning and sculpting. It is also very low impact which is best for someone with excess weight. Additionally, she found so much unexpected support from this activity. Although she is quite young, most of the participants were older and every shape and size, bar none. The older ladies were extremely supportive and non judgemental. She has lost 70 lbs in six months, she still has a way to go but I'm sure she will reach her goal. Generally, water aerobics is inexpensive and you don't need any special equipment. All the best to you and good luck.
BTW, the lab band surgery didn't work the way it was suppose to for her. She could still eat and drink everything she always could. It's all diet and exercise that has helped her lose the weight.

You know I actually don't need to lose weight. I'm max. 20 lbs over now but even that would be ok if I could turn that 20 to muscle. I just want to get strong so I don't feel so frail all the time!
Thanks guys,

Do you have any weights? are you trying to get stronger(more cut) or bigger (more power). It's always a good idea to mix cardio ( swimming would be the best option for cardio) with weight training for the double whammy effect.

As for your core, a couple good exercises to start off with for your core are; bridges & sitting v's.

Bakatare put the needle on the record. Pilates or Yoga is an excellent way to start, and prevent injury. You will stretch all of your muscles (injury prevention and feeling better in general), and strengthen all of your stabilizer muscles. Walking on a treadmill, uphill, or stairs is an excellent way to get your heart and legs ready for any kind of serious work out routine. When you have not worked out in that long it is very important that you build a solid foundation from which to start strengthening, and toning.
