everyday watering.

so ive recently been using 7-10 gallon fabric pots 20 plants under 4000 watts. i notice that when watering with about a gallon, that the top two inches are dry by the next day. should i cover the top soil? and any good suggestions for what?

I have seen people use hydroton to cover the top of the soil I don't know how good it works but it might be worth a try

I was under the assumption the hydration was for aesthetics, where as mulch helps water retention I dono if you wanna rock that indoors tho?

Stick your finger in. thats th best way to tell. i have a high peat and perlite oil, so it drains quick. plus the hps are warm so they dry out quicker. however cannabis is not a water lilly. you dont need to drown it. it its not drooping, its got water. weight of the pot and the finget test are much better indicators of dryness that topsoil. i water every 3-7 days on flower, and everytime my buddy sees them he trips, tells me they will die. haha whaterver, this is a guy who calls fan leaves "useless branches". that made me laugh. you dont need to water everyday. unless you grow in 1 gals under 1000 watters.
i watched a vid of a guy who used cfle, and only wattered these midget ass autos 2 times intheir whole life. you just need to check the medium. if you are really worried, water using the bottom up method tith trays. you just fills the trays, and the girls drink what they need. no worry about over or under watering. however, as arjan of the greenhouse pionts out, if you flush and dry your pots, you can finish one or two weeks quicker than usual. its no bs. they finished their skunk in 6 weeks, something i can believe, as im growing their superbud, a skunk andbig bud cross. its in its 4th week, smells dank, is covered in chrytals, and is already 75% done. ill be able to chop at 7 weeks no problem. my mandala satoris, using the same method will probably be done after 8 weeks. usually super bud is 8 weeks and staori anout 9-10. if you do it right, drying the plant works in your favour.

I think it's good to have the top 2 inches dry as long as the rest of the pot is wet. That will make it harder for fungus gnats to breed too.

dude your retarded seriously. i know my soil is dry "stick my finger in" doesnt answer anything i asked lol. and i doubt that youve ever once in your life only watered once a week in flowering which shows me youve prolly never even grown jsut read. all this nonsense about drying out your soil is nonsense to me. thanks for the retarded lecture nobody asked for though.

Lift the pot if its light water if its heavy it dose not need water the top being dry is not a big deal if its that importent to you mulch would help with the top drying to fast and theres no need to water everyday

When I grew in soil I used the "kick the pot" method, tap the pot with your foot after you have watered, notice the resistence. Every morning go in and give the pots a kick, You will know by the difference in the feel when they need more.

I prefer to keep the top layer dry, like 70's natureboy said the top few inches inhibits fungus gnat development. But if you want to keep it moist I've heard of some growers covering their topsoil with coco.

you can say i dont know what im talking about, but im not the kid WAY OVERWATERING AND KILLING my plants. the finger test, actually works, just because your TOO LAYER is dry, dosent mean anything. and also, dj short waters ever 3-6 but i garentee you he would wait if it ook longer for them to get a bit dryer. And you dont know shit from looking at the top level. when you stick a finger in, you can feel the moisture way dow. you completly disregard a time old, well know method. if you cant handle that, go spend 50 to 100$ on a moisture meter. btw you stick that in the soil to, or was that to hard to grasp. the fact that you dont know about the finger test leads me to question YOUR EXPERIENCE. any real grower knows how to check his soil. there are many methods. and how do you think it was done before moisture meters. ask anyone, its you who dont know what the hell you are talking about. what kind of idiot wates everydah and trips about dry soil. ill tell you, the guy whose on his first grow, or maybe some weeds growing in his daydream. experienced groweres dont ask stupid questions, like this thread. that is a honour reserved for beginners, or those with zero growing skill. And one last point there "master growerer", if you are giving 7-10 gal containers one gal a day, theres something really wrong with you. its that how it rains in nature? exactly a gallon at 8 every morning? wow buddy. congrats. you should win the cannabis cup yourself. in the worst grower ever section. it will be a black cup full of Mold! i use 3 gal pots and give em about 3/4of a gall per watering. if plants arent drooping or wilting, they are not in harms way. enjoy your mold cup there master grower. you are a disgrace. if pots are to dry, or dry out to quick, ad moe watter. if to wet, dont add water. and if they dry out completly, you have done ot. you have succeded in growin weed, congrats its read to harves

You sir are a dick...he posted on here asking if it is ok and shit...i water my 3 gal girls a third gal every few days and my big girl 18 gal get a gal every few days also....water till runoff begins op...me i use a cup to water so i do a big cup each plant then do it again allowing time for the water to soak on down there

As for being a dick. that was the point. read wher buddy calls me retarded for giving him good watering advice. if he wants to be a prick, hes gotta expect it back. he thinks i dont know anything when i merely explained a solid method of watering(and knowing when to water). i thought that kind of info would be helpful for someone askin these kind of questions. instead of ignore it(which is what you do with so called BAD avvice lol, he decided to call me dumb, and tell me i dont know anything. any experienced soil grower would tell him the same methos i did. others mentioned kicking pots. i do not find this reliable. its just not for me, but if it works for the next guy great. im not going to blow up and freak out. however i will speak my mind when someone calls me dumb for sharing common knowledge that any grower wh is worth anything should know. not only is it common sense, its common knowledge. ive met a babboon once in africa, in ethiopia. this thing was carrying around a rotten fruit, and i had no idea why. a local told me they rot the fruit to ferment it and get drunk. and this is common knowlege for babboons. do you think young babboons call old babboons retarded, and talk shit because they never heard of it before? of corse not, babboons cant talk, but if they could, they would say that " personal lux" is full of himself and to try tge rotten fruit. someone like that, you know they is gonna like it
