Evaluate My Grow Plan

This will be my first time growing and I want to do it right the first time. I'm hoping to be able to grow some amazing bud. I'll be ordering some crazy strains (G13 Haze, Alaskan Ice, and Northern Lights are at the top of my list) online and I want them to reach their full potential. People have told me that as a first timer I might get some decent nug but it won't be what I'm hoping for. Here is my plan for growing.

Grow Box:
I want to grow 4 plants in my 3'x4' floor area closet. I'm am going to build a
6'H 4'W 2.5'D grow box. I will make it air tight with vents and reflective on all inside walls with 2mm mylar film. I was thinking it would be possible to avoid getting a reflector if I already have all sides and the ceiling covered with mylar. Would this work?

Light:

I haven't officially decided about this yet. At first I was considering both a 400w MH and HPS for the vegetative and budding stages. I'm concerned that this might be unnecessary to get both. I was also thinking of just buying a 430W Eye Hortilux bulb to cover both stages. I would also consider 600w or 1000w bulbs? Would this increase in wattage significantly impact my potency or yield

Hyrdo Setup:
I will be using the Ebb and Flow system with a 30 gallon sterilite reservoir. I will use a water pump to pump to pump water through a ½'' vynyl hose through a hole in the bottom center of the tray. It will also have a second precautionary ¾'' drainage hose which will extend 6'' above the tray bottom to avoid an overflow. I will also use an air pump and air rocks to oxygenate the water/nutrient solution. I will use small rockwool cubes for the seedlings, then put them in a slightly larger cube and put it in with hydroton pellets.

Nutrients:
I've heard Advanced Nutrients is the way to go.

Carbon Dioxide:
Does it make a significant difference? Where would I go about getting some?

Pinching:

I am under the impression that pinching my plant with significantly increase my yield. But will it affect my potency at all?

Ventilation:

What would you recommend for a ventilation system in my grow box?

Odor:
How bad will it get? I will be in a 9'x9' room which leads out immediately to the kitchen and living room area which leads to a long hallway. I would like to have the odor confined to minimal smell in just my 9'x9' room. How can I do this?

So looking at my setup can I achieve my goal of lots of amazing high quality product (I mean some crazy fire bud)? Is there anything I can do better? Are there any factors that I have forgotten or do not know about that have a significant impact on potency or yield? Any other tips?

Thanks

I would get a reflector to direct the light down to the plants and give them the most amount of lumens directly aimed at them. The rest of the light will bounce off the mylar.

Would this increase in wattage significantly impact my potency or yield I would look onto getting a light system from this place. You can get a MH conversion bulb and an HPS that work off of the same ballast. You need to develop a good cooling plan to deal with the heat build up.

Hyrdo Setup:
I will be using the Ebb and Flow system with a 30 gallon sterilite reservoir. I will use a water pump to pump to pump water through a ½'' vynyl hose through a hole in the bottom center of the tray. Nutrients:
I've heard Advanced Nutrients is the way to go. DEFINATELY!! They do cost a bit more than the others but I know from personal experience the result they produce. Look into Super Plant Tonic from BMO on ebay. Great stuff!! Its a good root innoculant that can be used from start to a few weeks before finish. Also look into some micro nutrients and compost teas (from a local hydro store or make your own)

Carbon Dioxide:
Does it make a significant difference? Where would I go about getting some? I know what your thinking but pass on this for now. Spend time talking and breathing on your plants and they will get all the CO2 they need.

Pinching:

I am under the impression that pinching my plant with significantly increase my yield. But will it affect my potency at all? Topping and FIM'ing produce multiple colas. I really dont believe it does anything for potency. With 4 plants you have the possibility of 1lb of dry matter in your stash without topping. I would just use the KISS method for this grow.

Ventilation:

What would you recommend for a ventilation system in my grow box? Definately a must!! You will need an air cooled tube for your lamp for sure and also a carbon scrubber (the elf is fine if you look in that website I linked in my reply to lights). I will discuss below in the odor section. You also need a fresh air intake fan.

Odor:
How bad will it get? I will be in a 9'x9' room which leads out immediately to the kitchen and living room area which leads to a long hallway. I would like to have the odor confined to minimal smell in just my 9'x9' room. How can I do this? Defiantely a concern!! Hook the elf carbon scrubber up to your air cooled tube either at the intake side or exhaust side (i use intake side) and you will be good with odor for the most part. Some will escape as your spending thime with them and the door is open or if you turn your fan off at night.

So looking at my setup can I achieve my goal of lots of amazing high quality product (I mean some crazy fire bud)? Is there anything I can do better? Are there any factors that I have forgotten or do not know about that have a significant impact on potency or yield? Any other tips?

Measuring cup
ml/tsp syringe
PH tester (not the cheapo metal prong from lowes or HD) Strips with drops is a cheap way to test your ph.
You will also need a ppm pen for your water

Thats about it for now...I'll edit back if I think of anything else.

Hope this helps.

Thanks
Good luck bro!! I'll keep watching :hump:

Well for starters, my first grow without this site turned out exactly what i wanted and some of the best bud i smoked so the people that say that are just silly. And you have this site to bounce ideas off of so it will be good i am sure.

Light: A 400 watt will do nicely and anything more is overkill for 4 plants. You only need one or the other, MH wins in Veg stage, Hps wins in budding. But MH doesn't get very good results doing both stages but HPS does significantly well in both areas.

Your Hydro setup sounds good to me, no need for change.

Carbon Dioxide is kinda expensive to get the tanks, but you can make your own using sugar, water and actiated yeast. Mix these together in two empty soda bottles. Look online for a detailed explanation.

I pinch my plants with great results, what happens is you damage a shoot of the plant so the plant works more on that area to fix what's wrong and it creats a knott and beefs up that whole branch making bigger buds if done just as female pistils start to show.

Odor can be controlled by making Carbon Scrubbers, i personally made one using a pringles can, some wire mesh, pillow cotton and a 7 dollar carton of Activated Carbon from Walmart. Place this on your vent system an wallah, kills almost all the smell. You can make a bigger one if needed or multiple, i can't smell my grow box no matter how stinky it gets inside.

You can increase yield and potency of an all around product by applying a sea of green method where you also top plants to even out the surface area of the grow room ao all plants are even and all bud sites get equal light coverage. This will result in same sized buds and quality as aposed to getting one big cola and some smaller colas.
Would love to see how it goes, keep us updated
