BOOK FIRST. Then start trying to grow.

If you have to ask if you need 12hrs of dark, you don't know enough about how it grows to start it... like making a baby when you don't know the first thing about kids....

If you are growing to actually have a decent yield, in a decent 3 month period, you WILL need to spend energy. You will need HID lighting.

If you got time, patience, and dont mind spending every day for a 6 weeks playing with the plant before you start flower... you can use CFLs.

Remember this: A nice panel of 23w CFL can penetrate almost 3-4" of foliage........... the outer layer will produce. A 1000w HPS bulb can punch thru and provide light for buds 15-18" thru foliage. The whole plant, top to bottom, outside to the stalk... whole thing produces buds.

Light is the most important part of photosynthesis, don't skimp unless you have to, and if you have to, remember to adjust the plant accordingly.

If you want low heat, low power, then CFL or even LED is your best bet, but learn MUCH about LST training, so you expose as much of the plant to surface light as possible....

I just tell ppl, if ur serious, get serious. Spend the money the first time, get good lights, good fans, and good genetics. The nutes and dirt/water and all that is just salesmen, its all the same.

Sun and air.... if you want to play God, you gotta be willing to be a good God, not a half ass one... build your empire to succeed, not simply survive.
think the man wants advice not criticism. . we all start somewhere. .. if I were him I'd go for grolux lights that have the right red and blue to give best for veg and flower. but CFL lights show some amazing results. each to there own . do what u feel the plants telling you . simple end of

i completely agree with you and thankyou for the advice.
i didnt actually plan to start growing, i just happened to get 1 seed out of a bag and thought id plant it to see how it developed. As soon as it looked promising i wanted to do whatever i could to help it grow into a decent plant. I was talking to a friend about lights and i said that someone should invent Led grow lights as they last for years (the bulbs do anyway) and they are cheap to run, then he informed me that they have been several years ago which i wasnt aware of. Then when i was looking into lights i read about cfl bulbs which was only 4-5 days ago. I never planned on starting to grow i was going to leave the plant on my windowsill until autumn then see what it was like.
So right now im finding whatever i can from around my flat and trying to help my plant the best i can.
its not been something ive thought about until a few days ago which is why i know nothing.
theres loads of different advice online in the various weed forums.
someone did say that if using cfl bulbs they can be left on 24-7, thats the only reason i asked. He said as the bulbs are weak it doesnt cause any harm to leave them on.
and yes i do have the time and patience to do whatever i need to using these bulbs.
hopefully ill get enough out of this one plant to get myself up and running with a reasonable set up. Either cfl or led lights i want to use mainly for the low running cost.
now i know this is something i want to do i absolutely will get decent equipment as soon as i can afford it.
so far ive been scraping by.
im on this site to learn as much as i can about growing, mainly for my next grow which i will start and finish
doing everything correctly.
thanks again mate

This information is not completely correct. Spiral CFLs broadcast their light sideways so orientation is critical . If above the plant then they should be vertical , but side lighting with lamp stands is fine, howeverlamps should be raised as plants grow taller.
