Im used to seeing the black and red wires

black being - and red being +

but this has a white wire instead of the red wire

would it be safe to assume that the white wire is the + ?

just making sure before i go blowing out my light or something

yep the white wire is the positive wire. usually it's safe to assume that if they're are two wires and one is black the other is positive. i've seen blue/black, red/black, and white/black and so far they all check out. hope this helps

The white is not the power wire!!! The black is the hot wire and the white is the neutral.... In the usa anyways,,,

OMG!! Thankfully you posted this before the poor guy burned down his house!! Black=hot White=neutral bare copper lead= ground. The black - and red + he is speaking of is probably a 12 volt automobile

i always look at more then just the first reply on questions like these lol

in a two wire scenario the black is always the hot i.e negative and the others are all positive i know this from experience so trust when i say black burns and white zapps lol

i get ready to hook it up and guess what ?

( NO BALLAST )

this is the first cfl iv seen that was not self ballast

wtf am i going to do with it now put it in my 150w hps remote ballast , yea right

ughhhhhhhhhhhhh:cuss:

Strange. I have never seen one either. I don't even know if I have seen a ballast for a cfl...just the tube flourecents.
What brand is it?

I found this...dont know if it helps.....
<LI type=square>Is it possible to make a CFL that looks like a normal incandescent lamp?
  • Yes. One way is to enclose the spiral or folded tube in a glass or plastic outer housing. A better way is to make an electrodeless CFL using what is called induction coupling. Electrodeless CFLs can be constructed in bulbs that have the same shape as conventional incandescent lamps. Only three models of electrodeless CFLs are currently sold in the U.S. Two of these electrodeless CFLs are constructed as reflector lamps. The third electrodeless CFL looks very much like a conventional incandescent lamp, also known as an A-Line lamp.

lol, there are plenty of self ballasted 65 watt cfls on the market don't know what type you're going for but home depo has 68 watt 300 watt equivalent2700k bulbs for $15 and if you need a blue or 65k light check out http://www.1000bulbs.com/category/2-to-200-watt-cfl-compact-fluorescents , they all ways have good stuff for way cheaper than grow shops.
If I understand the OP he has a light that doesnt have a built in ballast. I think he is probably aware of cfl's with ballasts and wants to make this work without purchasing another bulb

it would be nice to make it work but i do not have a ballast for it

the only ballast i have is my 150w , and of course i can not use that

and even if i could im using it right now lol

im just gonna take this bulb back and get a different one

I'm sure but with the amount of work necessary not to mention the knowledge of electrical wiring needed to actually pull it off he would be better off just returning it and buying another one which is why i suggested it. no one wants to do more work than initially planned or spend more time waiting for things we already had but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and get it done as easily as possible and it seems just getting another light (after returning the unusable one) is the best idea so far unless you have a better one that is just as easily executed.

Exactly my man ,

much simpler and cheaper to just take it back and get one that is self ballast

then go spending extra money on electrical supplies and shit that will cost more by itself

plus someone like me not having the knowledge to wire all that shit up in the first place will just fuck it all up lol

ok, listen guys. the only way to know not to touch fire is the way we all learn by actually touching it as i did. we all know the things we shouldn't do. but most don't except them until they actually do it and learn what it was they've been afraid of in the first place

i never said this happened by accident and let me offer you guys this, if you don't agree with me then tell me what it is that i said that isn't right or you don't agree with and if you're right i'll admit i was wrong but come with proof of your own knowledge or an actual professionals not this shit

pulled right from google and seriously speaking if you knew what you were talking about or actually do then explain this and break it down so that every day'rs can understand until then admit to yourselves that there are others who might know a bit more than you and that they include me

Yes black is hot. on residential wiring it is positive. To prove this unscrew an outlet from the wall and stick your tongue on the screw that holds the black wire. Or just go get a volt meter and read the instructions on how to use it. The white wire is either ground or neutral. Either case negative. not trying to impose on your knowledge. Just kindly stating that you are incorrect on the subject. unfortunately being wrong with electricity could be much worse than just killing your crop. As a licensed union electrician, I believe I have the credentials to speak. Sorry for hurting your feelings.
