Dutch PM: EU must rally against threat from US, Russia

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Wednesday urged the European Union to rally urgently behind a rules-based international order against threats from Russia and even the United States.

"Even the relationship with our most important ally is no longer self evident," Rutte said in a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France which won a standing ovation.

Rutte echoed EU alarm over Trump's decisions to pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement and the Iran nuclear deal as well as to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminium. But he urged the 28-nation bloc to "keep working as closely as possible with the United States," which he said remained an ally nevertheless.

He said he stood before the parliament, the EU's only directly elected body, with "a real sense of urgency" because the bloc's way of conducting international relations can no longer be taken for granted. "The multilateral order is being challenged in a way that we haven't seen in decades, and the geopolitical balance of power is shifting,"

European Commission VP Frans Timmermans, a fellow Dutchman, underscored Rutte's points on the threat from the United States. "For the first time since 1945, we now have a president in the United States who apparently believes that a disunited Europe is more in the interests of the United States than in a United Europe," Timmermans. "Again this calls for Europe to be united".

Praising past presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan for fighting for European freedom, Timmermans said shared European and US values cannot be destroyed by one US president. "The more unity Europe has on the basis of international rules, on the basis of our values, the more chance we will have to help the Americans return to the same path,"

Till today, before becoming a EU lover, the Dutch PM was known to consider the EU good for mostly just economics and trade. It’s the pterosaurs effect (Trump ain’t no fucking butterfly) in action. MAGAts voting for Trump is making NL more pro-EUSSR. Despite it’s relatively small size, NL being one of the net sponsors and founders of the EU, has a major voice in the EU. It is also, or was... one of the most pro-American countries in the world.

Wait till the Dutch find out it was the Canadians who liberated them from the Nazis...

FFS do something already

Not entirely true. I knew a fine gentleman who dropped into Nijmegen once. True, some of his friends visited too and got somewhat bombed.

Sure, I was being facetious with that comment. It were above all the allies who liberated europe, and yes many Americans died for the liberation of NL as well.

(In NL, for Americans)

That’s exactly the point and why Rutte’s words on this weight so heavy.

@Sativied hey mate, would you mind if I asked a few questions about NL. I'm thinking about renting a canal boat in NL and doing a tour going thru a few different cities for my 50th birthday. You know anything about that? Last time in AMS is when I proposed to the wifey many years ago and I need to get back!

I’d be happy to give some suggestions, always applaud going outside the amusement park that is Amsterdam (because of the contrast) but you want to rent a canal boat

and tour with it through the Netherlands? I don’t think that is an option. :) Doable with a cruiser boat though.

Apart from a few museums and the RLD I don’t do much of the typical tourist stuff in AMS. I can suggest good coffeeshops (also outside Amsterdam) and restaurants though. This map should help limit options to pick when it comes to cities/areas. Typically the cities near rivers are the best (oldest, largest).

To put the scale in perspective, it’s a little over a 3 hour drive from Amsterdam back to Amsterdam if you’d drive around that big lake in the centre. The dike/causeway closing off the lake on the north side, connecting Holland and Friesland is only 20 miles long ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afsluitdijk ).

Anyway, pm me if you want more specific suggestions.

i have a few rental sites saved on my other computer, let me check them out for a bit so i can get some better questions for you. more about what cities would be worth visiting. most of the tours they recommend go from 3 to 7 days and give an itinerary.

give me a bit and I'll PM you in a day or so. appreciate the help!
