Dry firing cobs

Can I power on my cobs for 10 sec without being attached to any heatsinks? I'm not entirely sure my driver will has enough volts to power all my Vero' s would like to check before I do my build.
 
you can dim your driver all the way down for extra protection

not sure what "testing" will do. if they dont light up are you gonna abandon the project or something? take 10 min to throw those suckers on some heatsinks

if your string doesnt light up just yank one cob out

You could lay them on some metal like a frying pan or something then they will get some cooling. Maybe even cool the pan first.
 
As Cobbie indicated, dim the driver down to minimum, test for no more than a second, just to see if they light.

I did the same thing with one of my 24V strips, cuz I was not sure of the voltage it needed. I just touched the leads of my 36 V supply to it just long enough to see it light up bright as fuck. Luckily it did not hurt it but that was way more voltage than they needed.
 
you could add up the volts of the cobs and compare that to the Vf of the driver. Whatever you do could you record it for posterity? I would connect cobs to heatsinks, I hate to waste my hard earned money. patience is a virtue.
 
i have videos on instagram showing powering of 3590s with constant voltage supply from 0-36V+ with no heatsink and all of those COBs are still in use today, just don't burn them up

OP would be better served to offer specifics of the build, particular LED/driver combo and we could tell you on paper if it should be ok.

It's my first build it's either going to a 4 or 5 cob building. I feel safer not mounting the chips and have to cut into the frame or drill with the acutal cob attacked.

Thanks I'll dim it to lowest and just fire. Too much Volts isn't going to be a problem it might run 5 maybe.

I've looked up the spec and had debates with members if the driver will run 4 or 5 Vero' 29's

I don't know about Vero specifically, but the CREE 3590 will fire at a potential lower than than the 36V, it will just be dimmer.

If it will run 4 then perhaps It's possible that the 5 Veros might run on a (might not have enough voltage) system but at a slightly lower forward voltage for each LED.

Exactly. COB's will operate within a fairly wide range of 5-7 volts, centered on their spec'd voltage.
 
Unfortunately Veros just dont magical match up like Cree. There's a whole thread about this I don't feel like bumping a dead thread.
 
As long as you're not punching through the junction from over-voltage you should be fine to try and fire them up. If they don't light they don't light, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do.

That is an expensive way to find out. What I did when experimenting. I connected minimum number of cobs. I have mixed 36v with 72v on a common driver it works. Constant Current says I will send the same current to each cob, 1400mmA in my case for 72v that means it generates 100w while a 36v cob generates 50w at the same time.

I would mount the cob's on heat sinks before doing anything. experiment with connecting after you have mounted that takes what two hours, or are you waiting for heat sinks too..

So what did you buy? driver cob number just curious.
