Doubling electric usage?

I know everyone says as a rule of thumb, two 1000 watt lights won't raise an eyebrow with electric usage.

My question is what if a house uses mostly gas, so the electric bill normally runs very low (about 3 or 400kw a month.)

The KW usage is almost always consistent with last years usage at the same time.

Would it not look abnormal for the bill to all of a sudden jump to 8 or 900kw a month from last years comparison of 400kw? My bill has almost always been consistent with last years comparison month.

I'd like to hear from fellow gas users or someone that works for an electric company. Or anyone else of course lawl.

The company might think the meter needs recalibrating or throw some questions out there, maybe flag the bill I don't know.

P.S. For any cops reading, I'm running some electric heaters this winter to save on gas and I don't want any of u assholes mistaking me for a pot grower and raiding me in the middle of the night like a bunch of nazis, thanks.

They'd probably presume you changed over to electric heat, bought new electric appliances, that kind of stuff.
I don't think it's the power company notifying law enforcement, rather they co-operate when asked . . . IF there's already an investigation going on. Could be dead wrong?

Simply adding another person to the household creates a bigger jump than that. It happens all the time and is not noticeable.

MrFishy is spot on. the electric company wont go throwing any red flags, and the cops have to go to the electric company to request the records. if you use more energy the electric company makes more money, they wont complain about that. if you jumped up to 1500k they might think that a short or meter malfunction is present. but dont sweat all that, your disclaimer for the cops is pretty funny though...a little paranoid are we?

Agreed... if you pay your bill on time, every time, this is their bottom line & with which they are most concerned. They will fully cooperate w the leo IF requested to do so... there needs to already be an issue not stemming from your power usage. That alone is nothing. The last place was at, power jumped twice the average from before & the neighbors. After 1.5 years (& a missed bill), they sent someone out to quick inspect the outside panel to ensure it was operating properly & that no one was tapping into the line. Had the bill not been missed, probably wouldn't have come out at all. Paid bill, never heard/saw another thing. Peace.

There are plenty of legit reasons for an individual to use more power on average. Maybe you're running a server in that closet. Thats why its hot in there too, and that fan noise. It all makes sense now

you use more power they get more money, pay on time and you should be fine. i personally doubt they care or go noseing around unless you were using a football arena amount

the power can come from so many different things, not a thing to worry about. people say 1000 watts per bedroom, i think that sounds like a good number to stay around.
