I thought I show a $5 yard sale find.........a submersible sump pump. I plugged it in and it works great. attached a garden hose & can mix 30gls of fertilizer at a time. Makes it easy to feed the plants........

What a treat to find this thread! This is a low key year for me...too many distractions...but I do have about 1/2 a 'script and about to get the hoop house ready to finish them under that great Farmtek greenhouse plastic you turned me on to last year. Retirement looks tasty, and that's after the rush of a King hitting your lure! Yahoo!

I'm already formulating plans for next season and I'm curious, what are some the advantages of greenhouse/carport growing?

I know of:
Protection from morning dew/fog (this could be huge for me since I'm near the coast)
Rain protection
Some insect protection
Some added stealth

Does the added warmth help the plants at all during normal weather? (I'm sure it helps when it's cold out)

Does the plastic top diffuse or spread light in anyway that helps the plants? Say your grow was up against a fence that caused some shade. Would the tall white plastic top spread light into the shaded areas?

Also, how many plants will fit into a Costco carport? I see you have 6 in your current setup DJJ. I'm thinking maybe 8 30 gallon smartpots for my "normal sized" plants.

Thanks!

Your right on track with the advantages of using a carport. I will also mention they add protection from the wind along with everything else. Yes, the top acts as a diffuser and spreads the light. As soon as the sun hits the top in the morning, the whole carport lights up..the shade cloth sides also provide a sun break for those rally hot days of summer, keeps the greenhouse cooler and allows air to flow thru. The advantages of growing in a carport easily justify the meager expense. I haven't grown outside without one for years. I think 8 30gl smartpots would fill a carport nicely.....good luck.....

Thank you brother. I hadn't even thought about wind protection, that would be nice. The light diffusion could be huge on my patio with the fence on one side and the house on the other. I can already see where just a little more light has made some of my plants larger than others.

now I just gotta convince the wife and start measuring the yard. I wonder if I can fit two. Hehe.

The peace of mind, once you put them under a cover is huge, it helps me sleep better at night. I've seen them ganged together to form 40' long ones. The adjustability & portability are big pluses also. You can raise & lower & expand at will.....

Thanks man. Anything to lower my paranoia is good in the wife's eyes. Lol. I think she'll be easy to convince if I can do it on the cheap. Craigslist will help with that for sure.
