Double Ended?

Is double ended really the way to go? I have 10 foot ceilings and would like to do 16 to 24 lights at 240v. What are growers generally yielding on double ended lights? Also, how many plants per light is recommended? I know you gotta keep your plants at least 30 inches away from these lights because they're so hot.

Tell us about your HVAC plans.
Well I was going to get a separate 5 ton AC unit for it and keep the room at 75°F consistently. It is also in a basement so much it should be a easier to keep cool. Thinking air cooled as well with inline fans, then just porting the hot air outside.

5 Tons of AC will handle about 8-10 Gavita DE fixtures, and the basement won't help cool it, just help keep it from getting hot in the summer and cold in the winter like the insulation it is.

Light bulbs are dying. Yes, they're cheap to buy- and that's the end of the savings;
  1. Gotta replace lamps regularly
  2. Gotta replace reflectors regularly
  3. Gotta buy & run a LOT of AC
  4. Spectrum sucks
  5. Much harder to grow the fire than with other lighting options
COB = Chip On Board LED, think of it as a coin with a bunch of LEDs inside, making the whole coin glow. Why is it better?
  1. No lamp replacement. Ever.
  2. No reflector, therefore no losses or need for periodic replacement
  3. Dramatically less heat emitted, needing much less AC capacity and operating cost
  4. Spectrum ROCKS
  5. Growing fire is easy
And that's it. It's a steeper up front investment you'll thank yourself for making.

What's average yield of a COB LED? Grams per watt??? I've just heard that penetration is terrible with LEDs in general.

If it's a blurple LED, stay away. COB LED is broad spectrum white light, you can get them in a variety of color temperatures.

The old school stuff was weak; these are anything but.

Lots of people here on this forum are hitting 1.5gpw on the regular, sometimes even 2gpw... and that's not even the best part;

The best part is that these chips grow fire, the quality is noticeably better than HID grown product. That's money in the bank.

Any brands or models you would recommend for LEDs?
I am definitely going with 1000w DE from Yield Lab. The PAR is insanely incredible but I may very well integrate some LEDs for optimal coverage. So keep the DE over the top and have the LEDs mounted on the wall. Prolly do a 10 ton AC unit then.

This approach will get you compromise results at best.

Not as good. He means its not as good. I've been running the 750 gavita, and the bulb runs at 500 degrees. These cobs are running cool at 100 degrees. I'm in the process of changing everything over to cob. It's just better, but if you want to save some money in the mean time, DE does work. It's just less efficient and grows lesser quality buds.

Plenty of people throwing down with these cobs.

Where can i buy these lights an how many would i need for a 5ft x 5ft an 8ft tall tent ??

I'm still running 315W CMH lights and a few 860W CDM Allstart lamps, some of these are on square wave ballasts and the rest on mags.

I was driving in the mountains the other day and some dude in a jeep or pickup had small cobs on his bumper. They are so bright. You see tiny cobs in lots of stuff at Wal Mart, Home Depot in tool lights etc.
Just put together my first fixture a few weeks ago, and will convert my entire lighting once funding allows. Yea I just changed the batteries in my flashlight. Didn't even know it was a cob until I changed the batteries last night, forgot how bright it was.
My problem with DE is the heat they generate and less par/watt efficiency. They do yield a nice crop, but I want the best only.
