Done with RDWC, what next?!?t

I am done with RDWC as of the end of this harvest. I’ve run this system for years and produced a shit ton of nice buds. Poundage... yea it works.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I don’t need so much “fast” as I do quality at this point. Long story short, my mag pump died, another came today. I drained and cleaned everything, and when it arrived I hooked it up and it leaked. I bought new fittings, used tape, etc. still leaked. I ended up breaking it trying to tighten the joint. I’m gonna try to send it back to Amazon, we shall see.

So... I think I need to simplify. I’ve done a ton of soil grows early on so I know how to do it and all, but I’ve been in hydro mode for 2 decades (ebb/flow, DWC, RDWC, etc.). What I’m looking for is a nice, easy way to grow 12 plants under cobs and boards. Not hydro. Would it be coco, or some soilless mix? What fert should I use? Pot sizes? Etc, etc.

I know there are a million ways to do this and a million opinions as well. But please chime in and tell me what works for you. Thank you, peace.

Go coco. Combined with your past experience.....That would make you King of all grow medias.

Coco.
Bigger pots = feed less often.
Less perlite = feed less often.
Smaller pots = feed more often
More perlite = feed more often

Ferts.
KISS.
Jacks123, Megacrop, etc.

The least amount of parts,,,,,,ebb and flow probably.
coco needs auto watering so youve been there.
Not sure why a leaky fitting is a problem, pump is in the rez isnt it?

Subirrigated planter: grow in organic soil but with hydro-like results. Theres a whole thread on it: the SIP thread.

Yea, man! This looks great. What I’m thinking is tearing down the RDWC very soon and buying a bunch of Lowe’s 5gallon buckets. I have a bunch of tops for growing DWC that I can transplant them into to finish them. Then I can repurpose the buckets into SIPs for a pretty easy transition.

I’m about 10 pages into the sip thread and plan on reading the whole thing. Does anyone have a good, foolproof build tek for a 5 gallon bucket? I want to aerate the solution and I have a terrific Alita pump I’m using now.

id hit up @Humanrob he seems to be both helpfull and knowledgeable.
The hardest thing to get right is wick size and how much airgap to use: this, together with what type of medium you use for wick, is what controls how much water wicks up to the plant. The wider the wick, the more it drinks. the smaller the airgap the more it wicks. the amount of wick you have below the surface of the bottom res does not affect the amount of wicking.

My advice is to go for a 1.5-2 inch wick and set it up so that you can control the airgap by having access to the res. If your able to increase or decrease the airgap you can control how much water wicks up to the pot. One way of doing this is having the upper pot not sit directly in the res, and being able to lower or raise the res underneath the upper pot.

Another similar design but more towards the rdwc is the PPK: google PPK delta9 and it should popup.
edit: pedros grow on yt runs sips and has a fair amount of video info

Hey Tsat.Im thinking of going sips next run with 15gallon earthboxes(I already have them) I havent checked out the sips thread that thoroughly, but from what another member has mentioned, the bigger the pot,the better.Im not sure if 5gallons would last the whole run?? Maybe other more knowledgeable members can chime in.The super soil nu-be hooked me up with is working really nice if you're ever interested in it.gl

Maybe I'll buy an Earthbox from Amazon when/if I get my refund on the busted water pump. That way I can see how they do it first hand and then maybe build some...

i'm a hempy pot guy...how much easier can it get? water once a day till you see a little start to come out of the drain hole...and that's it...70/30 coco/perlite, foliar spray with 200 ppm cal-mag once a week, change that over to 200 ppm epsom salt when they go into flower. no res to drain and refill, no pumps to break, no lines to leak...

Really easy would to be to start over with bags of soil. And some organic nutes, but it can get complicated fast. Your plant knowledge is already great, so there’s that. Organic stubs into the problem of things not being released immediately like with hydro. That being said, I personally think that an Organic soil grow would be a nice next step for you. I would also recommend Subcools Super Soil. There’s prep time involved but it would be the easiest organic soil to do. No measuring, no ph’ing, you don’t need to add anything after transplanted. Have fun.

As said before. Hempy buckets are simple and effective. Can be hooked up to auto water system. Or play with your media and you can get 2-3days inbeetween watering.

3gal indoor Hempy s grow some big plants. I am stepping up to 5gals this next set. See if it’s worth it

So, I am still trying to get through that SIP thread, but I like it because it seems like a hybrid where I can use organic soil, aerate the res, easy water, etc.

There is one video of the guy from Build A Soil where he has a cloned plant that vegged a while, he transplants it into the SIP and then it goes into the flower room. I like this idea because I also have two rooms and was wondering what the best way to accomplish a move to flowering. Right now I have clones vegging under T5s in their net pots. Once ready, I simply pick them up and put them into the RDWC.

If I did it that way, I could have plants always in veg and when they get big enough just transplant to the SIP, that is already in the flowering room. This would be using something like that EarthPot...

yup, i really dig the Earthbox and its brother the the growbox, the earth box has 2.5 gallon res underneath soil with an air gap, so its a soil/ hydro hybrid, no pumps no wire, no air pumps needed, no need to mix nutes, and i dont even ph my water, perfect grow every time, i always had the speed of hydro once the roots hit the res, you wll get lots of water roots in the res, put your good soil in the top, and most of ran what is called a "nute Trench" where you acutally run a pile of dry nutes along the soil at a set depth, works amazin,
The Grow box has a 4 gallon res, and the fill port is on the front, Far less mess, And you can see inside the res,, and you can see your water roots,, those were HUGE plusses for me,, these things are everything a guy could want if you want EASY!! and i gravitate to easy,,,
