I was using high bay shop lights by detaching the ballasts and wiring with 12/3 cable. I thought why not put them outside on the deck (upstairs mind you) to let that heat out of the room. This was in summer. A black bear either climbed a tree and hopped onto the deck or shinnied up one of the supports. Dumb sonofabitch chewed into one. Got home, all lights out in the whole house. Flipped the main and the lights came on but one breaker - my flower room of course - flipped right back off. Hmmm what the hell? Went outside in the dark (not recommended without a big gun) and found the problems. Bet his jaw hurt for a week. But I moved them back in. They will "taste" ANYTHING and everything. The griz aren't that nimble and usually not that curious. I'm pondering now how to deter them at my homestead because they are everywhere near Denali National Park that I live by. Off the grid and we are growing outside with bow greenhouses. 22 mil sheet over won't take any bear stupidity to ruin. Very concerned about the fruity smelling strains. My thought was to use a water line that merely went outside, looped a few times to shed heat and then went back inside. No open windows, no smell to attract bears.
No, I do not live in Alaska. I live in a mid sized city in Colorado, and the closest I've ever been to a bear was when my buddy hit one with his Jetta coming down the canyon one evening. It was a glancing blow, and we drove back to see if we'd killed it. Nothing anywhere on or next to the road, so we figured he was okay!
