Does anyone replant the "top" after topping?

Title pretty much says it all. I picked up a clone last week and just topped it for the second time. I have been just sticking the little piece directly into the soil and dropping a couple of drops of water on it. The first one I did looks like it may actually take. Not growing really, but not shriveling up and dying. I was just interested to hear people's takes on this.

Do the clones you take from the top keep symmetrical growth? That would be convenient for manifolding the clone as well.

for the most part they're not exactly symmetrical, but they do start to grow like a mature top would sooner than usual alternating the nodes.
they should still be ok for manifolding.
