I have not brewed beer but I've always wanted to - it seems like an interesting project. I have fermented sodas and stuff but not beer. Anyway, from what i was told about beer brewing, you have to be very sterile bc it is prone to getting mold. That worries me because it sounds unsanitary. i would pressure cook all the bottles and utensils. i am neurotic about cleanliness. you have to have airtight bottles for fermenting, i got grolsch bottles for brewing sodas and they werent tight enough to create great fizz. I am addicted to fizz!!

The employees at the brew shop should be able to answer any questions you have. As far as fermenting, you will have an airlock on the top of what ever you use to ferment in, five gallon buckets are easy. When the air lock stops letting out CO2, usually around a week, then you can transfer it to another tank to strain chunks out or you could go ahead and bottle. Once bottled it takes a few weeks to become carbonated.

As far as Hops, grain, malt and what not all depends on the style of beer you want in the end

I brew 10 gallons at a time. I would recommend getting a co2 tank and a couple of corny kegs. Bottling really sucks. Plus you can force carbonate as soon as fermenting is done. That way, if you're impatient like me, you can drink it as sooner.

I'd just go with premade batches for the first few brews. I would also get a wort chiller. I bought 20' of copper tubing from home depot, and made mine for a little over $20. Have fun. It's quite rewarding to brew, and even better to get trashed off beer you made. :)
