What good would a chinese person do? I was told at the antique show this weekend in portland that is not a replica the gold and silver is too high quality.
They could not translate though so I am not saying they couldn't be wrong but that would be very sup[rising to find out they were wrong it was the peeps from antique roadshow... they said to produce this today would cost 4000-5000$ so being a replica is pretty much not likely

go to las vegas and pay pawn stars a visit. lol. I'm not really familar w/anyone who can translate japanese but I think you shouldnt have too hard a time. I'd google it and see if someone online has a shop or something that can translate it. how old is that item and what exactly is it? im very curious..

It is a TSUBA a hand guard for a katana sword. It is from the EDO period, which can be anywhere from like 1600 to 1864 ish. You can wiki it.
It drew a crowd at the antique show.

They said it had to have been made for someone very wealthy so they would not give me a value until it gets translated and they know who that "someone wealthy" was.

I bought it from an art auction website. I got it for like 400$ I was going to put it on my Katana, but when I saw how perfect it was I couldn't do it. As you can see from my picture album I practice martial arts

they are not as common as you'd think.lol, I visit one if the biggest sites out there for manga that i like to read, it takes 5 days from the time its released in japan till they have the translated version up. It also depends on what alphabet your looking at , japan has more than one. im guessing since that things so old the writing style/alphabet differ somewhat and make it even harder to translate, I could be wrong though, its worth a shot. www.onemanga.com they are real dicks when it comes to the rules so make sure you put it in the right forum and thread.

This is what I know so far.
I cannot figure out the last letter but the first four are 大森英重. It sounds like a name 大森 (Omori) being the family name and 英重 (Hideshige) being the given name. In Japanese, the family name always comes first. (quoted from my yahoo answers)
I assume the last character is not a letter but perhaps an owl or something that represented the family crest or makers mark?
