do i really need this much light?

everything i read says a 400w HPS for a 3' X 3' area. i went ahead and put in a 600w. if i drop down to 400w will i notice a difference? seems like i had plenty of light. is there a thing as overkill when it comes to wattage?

Good question
I wonder what the diff in power would be.

I would think it would be half the diff of downsizing from a 1k w to a 600w
since 400 is diff from 1k and 200 is diff from 600-400.

If I had the money I would opt for 600 and a solar panel. j/k

hey theres a solution to ur prob high output flouros 5000 lumes a 4 ft bulb and only runs 52 watts a bulb also low heat

well, i'm no expert, but it seems to me that logic would dictate the 600 watt bulb would produce denser buds than the 400 watt bulb. also, you can potentially fit more plants in your available space with the extra penetration allowed by the higher wattage lamp.

sounds good. i'll keep it.

I use only 1000w....as far as I know more wattage = higher bill(yes thats true)
but yeah 1000w covers a larger area as opposed to a 600 or 400w. I also think the higher wattage the bulb the more lumens it puts out.Ive only used 1000w so I have nothing else to compare it with

fdd for a 3x3 space 400 is just fine, i had used a 400hps on 1 plant with 4 branches in a 3x4 space and got a yield of a QP which i think is awsome. If you use more wattage that will eqeals more heat problem(watt = heat) and you can't put your light as close to the plant. so 400 is good 600 will probably give you bigger buds but for that much more wattage you won't get as much more bud. GL hope that helps

Btw i had put my 400hps about 5-8 inchs away from the top of the plant with a fan blowing in the spacing.

get a flor. light. im telling you they use almost no wattage. and they're just as efficient if not more, good % of lumens, and because of the "white or blue spectrum" it produces. instead of red.

well i cant say much because i have only use 2 1000w but i have seen some growers grow just as big of buds with a 600 then a 1000... i have a Q for you fdd are you using a light shade. because if your not mabe if you used one with the 400w it would do just as good as a 600w without one ...i think... i really cant say but maybe?

Yeah your right about that. I wouldn't even use a HID if I don't have atleast a spot big enough for 5+ plants. Its a waste of money. If your growing in 2x2 then I'm guessing cfl's are the way to go.

This pic here was a grow I did in a walk in shower 4X4 if not smaller...I used 1000w light and had great results, dense buds.....These plants yielded over a lb dry weight. I literally had the 1k lamp inches above the tops.:hump:

No because the heat would be too much.

a 400watt will also give it a heat problem if u don't control it, but consider you have the heat problem under control. a default reflector by itself is like 1x1 already so the spread of that will cover a 3x3 area and when you use a 1k bulb you cannot put it right on top of the canopy so a 400watt would be ideal for that type of spacing.
