yea mine seem to grow in the dark part of the cycle. both vegg and flower
thats how I saw it, but there must be some growth during light hours, because ppl do 24hr light schedules, but man when I do 36hrs of dark before switching to flowering and adding flowering nutes before switching it makes them have so much new growth when I look at them when the lights come back on.

During flowering, I seem to notice more growth after the night period, but during veg, it seems like the grow more (at least top growth) during the day period. Completely anecdotal though.

Plants don't sleep.

Some C4 plants fix carbon at night, or more specifically CAM plants (mostly desert plants). Cannabis is a C3 plant, which means it opens it's stomata (leaf pores) to transpire during the day. Photosynthesis is only possible when there is light, no matter the plant. However, that doesn't mean that plants can't grow during the night hours.

Photosynthesis creates an abundance of energy, which plants store mainly as carbohydrates (sugar/starches). They can and do store energy as fat as well (essential oils).

Few plants actually require darkness, but some do and will die if they don't get it. Cannabis isn't one of them.

But way to revive an 8 year old thread.

Resurrection! Plants definitely stretch and grow on lights off. That’s why I believe in begging at 18/6 not 24/0

From what I read they actually produce a hormone that is released during the night time so in fact I think you’re right they do in fact grow during the night time and you notice it after the first light comes on. I wish I could remember where I saw the article that

In order to flower correctly, seasonal cannabis plants need at least 12 uninterrupted hours of darkness. During the day, your plants are photosynthesizing, turning light into energy and releasing oxygen – this is just general knowledge. When in total darkness, cannabis plants begin producing a hormone called florigen, which is in charge of starting the flowering period. If your cannabis plants begin receiving more hours of darkness, they will produce more florigen which forces them to flower.

The main reason to veg 24 is to keep them from stretching. May seem backwards but cannabis plants stretch in the dark looking for light. I don't want my plants to get tall or have stretched apart nods so I always veg 24 for shorter stouter plants. The big stretch you get right after flip is from the 12 hr dark period.

Not sure if 24hrs is necessary I used to use 24 hours, but now the only thing I put under 24 hours of light are regens, it halves the time until new growth then its straight under 18/6. Also to reduce stretch add some 6500k light to the mix I used a mix of Hids and Cobs mh/hps red/blue cob (dual unit) changeable cobs, pics are unassembled of course. The leds are much better at wavelength optimization while hids are king in radiant heat, the plants can tell the difference. Leds are convection heat. Also you ever notice blue brings out more trichnomes? And answer to op, yes my buds definitely grew bigger when I went to bed. I notice when I reveg the buds stop growing when thrown under 24/7 I did this with a plant weeks into flowering and the buds really frosted right up its still going, it's about 5 days under 247

Yeah I recently vegged 24/0 for over 3 weeks. Switched to 18/6 and my plant grows MUCH faster now that she has a dark period.
