If I were to make one of these for a 3x6 tray would you recommend another set of legs or do you think 4 would be alright?

Nice design on the original post dude.

A rack for a 4x8 can run up to $300. I rapped this one out in under an hour.

"Ribbed" for her pleasure. :bigjoint:

Here's an action shot.

With no support in the middle, that tray will have boobs in about 3 months lol. Take another hour to knock together a better one! You're supporting a couple hundred pounds of water, meduim and plant... not making a dinner table.

Yes it's my first indoor grow. No boobs yet and I'm just shy of 90 days. She holds more like 600lbs not a few hundred :bigjoint:

If you look at Strongman racks, they use only a 2x4 on the long runs. She's fine. After this grow I'll take a look at her. I've been building shit like this for years (not for grows). You would be shocked how much weight short runs of wood can hold.

Here is my thread. Lots of little DIY's. All square cuts and round circles...nothing too exciting.

I like the original OP's rack...the storage at the bottom is key. That would be a nice rack for a few moms No Pun Intended ;-)

Right on guys thanks. I am definitely gong to make sure I put several slats in between to hold all of the weight. How long do you think I should make my legs? I plan on using a 70 gallon rez that is 30"x53"x12". Height really isn't an issue and I want to make sure I can access everything. Also what do you think about the rack on the bottom for that big of a reservoir--too big?

Regardless of how many slats you put under the tray, the load is pretty much on the side rails (that's where you will be screwing or nailing those slats to). In using the strongman rack as a model, they only have one 2x4 underneath a 4x8 tray.

A quality 4x8 like a Botanicare only needs one board underneath it to support.

There are some shitty trays that are very flimsy but a good quality tray doesn't need as much as people think. I generally over do a lot of things but your rack doesn't need to be over built.

Can't you just put your res on the floor and the tray above it sitting on your rack?

Ya sure, but I thought the bottom rack may provide added stability. You're probably right and I'm overthinking it...I just like to do things clean--the first time :bigjoint:

I think mine is so clean people don't even realize it's a DIY set up. You'll want that space under the tray. You're gonna need room to clean when you have a flood ;-)

I use a cardtable I got at the first thrift shop I looked in. It cost five dollars. Lowes carries various lengths of super sturdy card tables for around 40. Also saw horses are about 20 for a pair of heavy duty plastic. There the wood braces for a few. Just throwing them out there for us med patients who are slightly medically lazy! Great thread. Also those 27 gallon black and yellow totes can hold 400 pounds and a gallon of water weighs 8.35 gallons. At 12 bucks there is another ebb saving.

Fuck! Dont You guys just freaking love ebb and flow? Even places like lowes and home depot use those weather you can tell or no to water all their plants, albeit in soil. I shit you not those tables flood. While drip is the most comercial for water saving features I bet ebb sure rocks it for pot pots. Pots of pot. Pot. Hey is the dirt I spilled in my bathroom from organic soil actually dirt? It is not dead skin cells and shit yu know. My ex gf says it is the same thing. Glas I am back to good old gh three part hydro. CLEAN. I ramble, adios.

Have not seen this thread in a while. gl.

Here are some pics of the tray stand I made for a 6'x3' flood tray...notice the placement of the legs provides that the bottom of the tray sits directly on top of them as well as two 2x4 slats in the middle. I don't think the bottom of the legs is going to need any added stability, but I'll let you know once I test it...thanks for the DIY helped a bunch

You are welcome. I have moved to a system for building my tables now, no I do not have stock in the company, I use a 'Kreg Jig' to drill pocket holes, similar to what furniture builders would use. I still use the 2X4's. Next time we build one, I will do video of the build.
Thanx everyone for your input about this thread. VV

PS. see you on the radio, www.jgr1.net , Mondays from 5:00 to 7:00:-P

Nice work guys. Gotta love that DF. I was once asked "is that your kitchen you're growing in" LOL. The vinyl is very Kitchenesque :)
