i glue them no lens yet
Grrr your going to make me go over budget. I keep finding myself looking at these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10PCS-10W-20W-100W-LED-Lens-Reflector-Collimator-4-90-50x22mm-new-/180851047865?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a1b8ffdb9 and thinking how much penetration I'd get with a total 14900 lumens coursing through 20 of them. I hadn't really considered it but after I commented here I went off and did a bit more research - specifically I saw the 12" plant/bud that Puffenut has grown in a damned plastic cup! Maybe I can wait and just have it as an improvement further down the road.

i think lenses are good for grows where have you lots of space and want the light to only travel towards the plant. If you are growing in a small room or a crowded room make sure that your walls are covered in a highly reflective mylar like substance. But dont worry about lenses too much as the light will reflect onto the plants from the walls. for the most part diffraction of the light all over the room coming from all angles is good. But it can be bad if your plants canopy doesnt completely fill your room.

30 bucks for Lenses seems pricy... you just save that money for more LEDs instead

OK, so I'm thinking...

should be fairly easy to DIY a hinge system on all four side of the heat sink.

Affix ~ 8" panels to the hinges. Swing in/out as necessary. This should allow better focus the array to the grow without lenses

That's a damned good idea there, I'm not convinced that they would be a reasonable length in order to work properly though. I am so undecided I mocked it up in 3d but that didn't help either :(

Crappy light with sides 4.jpg

You can kinda see what I mean though, because the LED are spread across the board the angle that the light hits the sides is always too far for half of the reflector...

Sorry for the shitty render.

Thanks Mika, you are right, I don't need em really, the lamp is for a little space anyways... I just get excited at the idea of hitting those plants with the LED equivelant of the "SOL" weapon from Akira hehehe.

^^^^hey someone's trying to infringe on FranJan's PATENTED aluminum chaffing dish......ha

Oh shit the chinese already did...http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/636719146/2012_facebook_fastion_usa_new_model.html get your lawyers ready Franjan!!
Yup and then I'll market it worldwide and get a good treefiddy ($3.50) :D I'm still not convinced it would work, if I was less lazy then I would put lights into my model so you could see the actual light placement cos I'm fairly sure it won't work with my layout so good as for example Gastankers design.

When I first used my ufo 90 (~ 3 years ago- SUCKER) I noticed how much the light diffused. I had that plant in a 14g tote, so I bought a windshield reflector and wrapped it around the tote, concentrating the light inside that area. I get my money's worth for clones and/or mixing in small cfls/leds in my back up system.

It is amazing to see how far led tech has come since then, but mostly it's underground by us'en.

if I remember my Satellite design 101 then gold is a good reflector of red spectrum but absorbs blue (great heat shield) maybe I'll have a play with it and see what I can achieve before investing, also a mylar "skirt" may look suitably ghetto
