I can see amber color down into the stalk of the trich with my scope but it is pretty powerful.

When checking though, look at the head for the color to determine potency. It will look like a little amber miracle is being spawned within :-)

About drying... I'm going to use a cardboard box to start with. I have an extra computer fan, and some black tubing. Should I simply hang the bud in the box and close it... opening twice a day? Or should I put the fan inside the box to move air around? Or should I cut a hole in the box for the fan to blow fresh air it, letting it seep out the edges? (like I said I have tubing so the hole wouldn't let in light).

   <------ Three cheers for jesse for all his help

LOL thanks guys I am just a noob myself, standing on the shoulders of giants.

About the dry box. I would go with the vented box.

I cured in a closet, thus a larger volume of air relative to the nugs and their moisture.

A box, on the other hand, has quite less air available and thus needs to be cycled out to be sure to ward off mold, IMO. Some may think I am being paranoid, but if I lost my harvest from mold while it was drying....I would have a fucking funeral I would be so upset. What about you?

I would go with a dark, well ventilated area for sure.

Alright guys... I'm going to cut my first little bud. I'm going to cut off the top 1" - 1 1/2" of the bud in the back I thought looked ready a couple days ago.

I have made a little box to dry in. I have a tube for air intake and a 25cfm fan pulling air through the box. The box is maybe 18" tall, I have the string across the top... then the air flowing across the bottom so there is no direct airflow over the bud. I checked the humidity and temp in the location I'll keep the box... it is 45% humidity and 73 F.

As for trimming... I am going to cut off the not so crystally parts... put those in a bag or something, but I'm going to leave the other frosty leaves until things are dry... I read it helps things dry evenly and protects the trich on the buds. I don't think I will be using this strategy for the entire harvest as it seems like it will be a lot more work than just trimming down to the bud right off.

I'll go take some pics of the box. And I'll take some pics of the bud after I cut it.

Let me know if anything sounds off.

Why not cut the whole bud? Why just the top? going for double harvest? I would suggest putting the trimming in a bag like you said and then freezing them in a air tight ziplock till you have enough to make something with, this will also help seperate the crystels from the plant matter

if youve already built it cool, but i just punched holes in the side of the box my reflector hood came in. and ran strings. holes were with a bic pen, and leave the top flaps a little loose. works great!

Trimming matters, if you think about it. If you go crazy with the shears untill you hit bud, youve cut off a bunch of trich covered leaflets poking out of the bud. loss of good stuff! Unless you are planning on making a batch of hash every month, you should leave some of the smaller covered leaves on the bud.
It took me like four hours to cut and manicure the last 6 plants i harvested. And they were SOG style......:hump:.....know what i mean?

trimming and manicuring is what matters for bag appeal, or bragging rights...lol..and should always be the next most important part of the grow, right below proper drying and curing. The rest is pretty easy if ya think about it.
Wow, sorry for rambling Jig, I just enjoyed my last WW harvest...:hump:..bongsmilie

I don't know about cutting the whole bud... it just seems so drastic. I know that sounds stupid... I'm lauging at myself right now. Maybe I will cut the whole thing. Basically I feel like the kid who wont just off the diving board... asking if it's ok if I just jump off the side of the pool. And even then the kid does a lame belly flop dive off the side.

I'm kinda scared to do anything, but figure I have to get over it sooner or later... especially if I'm going to cut all the plants down pretty soon.

Here's some pics... I'll have more soon after I do a little work.

The first pictue of a bud is the one I'm going to cut.

The last picture is a bonus shot of the monster White widow bud in the center of the screen.... she is just insane. Still getting bigger.

pictures...

after trimming it weighed 4.8 grams.

roughly you divide by 4 to estimate dry weight... so a little over a gram.

a couple more pics

oh... and after getting a better look at the bud, it could have gone a few more days still. This grow is never going to end.

But it's all good... just more bud, and better.

The pic of me pointing is where the bud was... that's what's left on the branch.

Thanks again for the help (so far, I still need it).

How much longer are you going to have to wait???
Thanks a lot 24/7, mafia, mr. gray... I appreciate you sharing this big time with me.

I"m guessing you mean till the rest come down... I'd say about a week (it really hurt me to type that just now... I really don't want it to be true). And that is for the Hindu Skunks... I have no idea when the White Widow will be ready... she just started changing her white hairs.

I am guessing I'll have to wait about 5 or 6 days for the bud to dry. It is in a semi cool spot with about 45% humidity. I'm looking for a slower dry... now that I cut somethig I am satisfied for a little while. We'll smoke it soon enough.

Thanks again for stopping by guys. :bigjoint:

sorry if this was asked already but what kind of netting did you use to separate the roots? is there a specific kind you need? or does it not matter?

Ask away bro... I used "Hardware Cloth". I bought it at Home Depot for like $8 (i think). http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?id=100384025&jspStoreDir=hdus&catalogId=10053&marketID=401&productId=100384025&locStoreNum=8125&langId=-1&linktype=product&storeId=10051&ddkey=THDSiteMap

It doesn't matter so much what you use... as long as it's plastic. No metal.

My netting actaully really helped becuase I think the lid would collapsed with out it acting as a brace. I wouldn't necesarily plan on using your netting as a brace, but I would suggest a support made out of pvc pipe or something if you plan on having a large tank like mine, with large pots that comprimise the structural integrety (i sounded smart there).

Post #18 and 19 are on Page 2... they have all the pictures and description of what I did.

Glad to have you along for the ride homey.

Hey everybody... I got a pm with a bunch of questions in it, and I thought since I was taking the time to answer I would share with all of you. I got the authors permission, I don't want you guys to think I put pm's out there like that. I'm discrete.

- Is your rez in the closet with the girls or dows it sit just outside the closet.
They are IN the rez. My DWC is Not a recycling with an exterior rez. All 28 or so gallons are in the tank the plant are directly on top of. Their roots just hang in the water, with all the airstones giving them oxygen so they don't drown. (some real scuba shit)

- Are your roots submerged all the time, and if so, did you have any color change in the root color over the course of the grow?
I didn't read ahead as you can tell from the answer above. Yes.. they are submerged all the time. I have not been able to see the roots really becuase the plants are all grown into the screen. And stupidly I attached the screen to the walls so nothing can move... and I cannot see into the rez much. From what I can tell the roots are white with the tiniest brown tint to them, but it's really really not much. Just if you sat them next to stark white roots the would look dark. But that is only what I can see from the tiny holes in the lid with a flashlight... (you should see me trying to see in there, it's comical)

- Did you use anything like hydrozyme or floroshield in your rez?
I used this stuff called Zone by Dutch Maters. Here's a link to the product LINK After re-reading it myself it just sounds like a bunch of sales shit. Who know's what it does, but I like it alot and would recomend it. PLUS it's so fucking cheap... Maybe $20 a liter, but my whole grow with a 25-28 gal tank I only used maybe 200mL... so this will last me forever.

- Did you have problems controlling the temp of your rez? If so, how did you correct them?
I did have a bit of a problem at the beginning of my grow. My water always start at about 55 F, but quickly (an hour or so) rises to about 62... then it starts rising until the day I change it. When I started by about day 5 of the new water temps would get to around 72 or 73... that made me uncomfortable. So I changed the way my intake and exhuast worked and also built a separator for the two sections of my grow space. The intake for the grow space had been coming from a duct that ran up from a hole in the bottom of the door. I had it so the fresh air would be drawn by the exhuast directly into the area below my screen. But I wanted to cool the rez more... so I took off the ducting so that the fresh air would be pulled directly onto the tank, keeping it cool.

I also cut and fitted the wood peices you see in some of my pics. They are fitted tight against the walls and the sides of the lid. This keeps the heat and light from getting to the water at all. Also it makes it so that the fresh intake air is sucked into the reservoir 'chamber' first, and then into the grow space... then over the light, then across the ballasts, and finally spit out the top of the door.

Now my water gets up to 69 F in the 7-8 days that I keep water in there. It also helps that I top off every couple days with a couple gallons of RO that comes out around 50 or so.

I'm not saying they don't work for people, but the idea of actually putting things in the water to help correct issues is not for me. I wouldn't want to have any kind of chillers, or heaters, or ice cubes, or frozen bottles. Everything in my tank is either liquid, organic plant matter, or pvc... plus the ceramic airstones. Frozen bottles are close to those things, but I can not imagine how unhappy roots would be if an ice cube or frozen bottle tucked in next to them.

- If and when you make a second attempt, would you consider growing in soil?
The second attempt is already going. Sticking with DWC (see signature - grow 1.2 - Purple kush clones). Don't know if I will ever try Aero. I might try ebb and flow, but don't know why I would (maybe just boredom). I may use some sort of dripper when I get a mother, or mothers going.

I will however at some point try soil. Never for my primary grow, but maybe just to try it with a plant or two. I would like to try soil indoor with 2 plants in their own chamber. I would also like to try outdoor someday. Don't know when I will get the chance, maybe not for another 20 years or so, but I would like to grow an absolute monster and yeild like 10 pounds or something off 1 plant. That is a little wish I have.

The reason I won't go with soil primarily is that I am dying here waiting for my plants... and they would be even slower in soil. I'm patient (that's why I haven't cut them all)... but my well of patience does not spring eternal... and I think I am at my limit even with the accelerated pace of hydro.

Thanks a lot for the questions and interest. Hope that answers everything. Let me know if there is anything else.

Good luck

thanks man, im starting my own dwc grow in 2 weeks or so after i get all my supplies and such and i've always noticed people complaining about root tangling and stuff. i was thinking about separating it with a net or some sort and saw you do it and seemed like a success! thanks again and happy smoking :bigjoint:

haha, so in the end we will end up harvesting together. I can't wait to smoke the bud I cut. Does any other the stuff you started curing taste better, or feel better than before?
