DIY Carbon Filter

I'm using some thin cloth towels (almost exactly the same as the ones from panhead's carbon bag design) on each end of a 4 inch coffee tin. Inside of the coffee tin will be a few activated carbon replacements for fishtanks. Here's a link to the activated carbon bags: http://www.petco.com/product/13584/Hagen-AquaClear-Activated-Carbon-Filter-Inserts.aspx

The coffee tin will be attached to a 4 inch inline duct booster fan pulling the stinky air out of my flower room. Does this sound like it will work? I have it all set up just need to get the carbon tomorrow. Will the linked product work well for this application? If you need some pics let me know and I will post some up. Thanks a lot guys :blsmoke:

Harvest Cauition

If you harvest a lot of plants at one time on an old filter (end of grow). Then only do 1 or 2 at a time so as not to over work the filter. If you can this makes a nice time to switch the carbon if you will keep growing,

Late flower around day 80+. and smells strong. Each fan leaf you pluck will add a burst of smells.

So be carefull and check be for you harvest. (the smellest part of the grow until drying)

Mine way fine but I changed it one time before this. I only did two at a time. the pouse for the room to air out then two more.

That would work but from what I under stand the carbon filter works better if you suck air thru. I could be wrong on this but the resrarch I did tended to show this.
Is this used for intake or exhaust? Forgive the noob questions. This is what I think my problem was when I was trying to grow during trial and error which will always be around.

Exhaust should go out the top and intake should come in at the bottom correct?

So the exhaust fan is in the grow box right, with the duct coming out of the box? Is the carbon in the coffee can outside the box? Sorry for the newbie questions. Does this technique work in veg stage?

So from looking at your DIY carbon filter setup ..Here's what I'm trying to figure out..You have ducting flowing out the room with the same ducting attached to a fan..more ducting connected to the coffee can..am I right.. This is the most confusing part for me in my plot to design a nice grow-op..It looks as if I'll need to run 2 exhaust, and 1 intake.. Is that pretty much standard in
a flowering room ..1 ex for the filter..1 exhaust for lighting/overall grow room temp and 1 foe fresh air intake...

Thanx if you can help..newbie on a mission

All exhaust must pass through a filter to scrub odor. Only exception is with a cooltube if your intake is from a seperate room you can exhaust it out of the room without a filter.

You'd also be better off with a passive intake so that your exhaust creates a vaccuum and no odor escapes cracks around the door(s) or elsewhere.

I've made something similar before and it worked great. I just wrapped a carbon cloth filter around the wire mesh and capped one end. Then connected the other end to a CAN fan. Kept my grow smell-free for a couple months. When it starts smellin' again just buy another cloth filter. You can even get the ones at Lowes or Home Depot that have velcro on them for ease of replacement.

i made 2 of these for my tent, you can actually buy small 4" fans from hardware stores that sit perfectly on that coffee can, sucks air through just fine.

you know you can leave the bottom on and poke a shit ton of holes in the coffee can and then add your carbon then set it on the floor or hang it like you would with the ones you buy. it will work just like the $100+ ones.

Wouldnt it fall through?
How would it work being on the floor lol its not ona gel, contaminated air has to be pushed through it.

Hey guys, there's a lot of talk about these homemade carbon filters with good results. But I was thinking what about using the odourless kitty litter stuff I wonder if that works, anyone tried it?
