DIY Bubbleponic Setup. Help Needed.

Hi guys!

I want to build a DIY version of the SH Bubbleponic system... I've never done hydro before so this is a big adventure.

I have an area at my friends house we are going to convert. Its a walk in closet that is 32" (80cm) by 32" (80cm) with a little extra length (say 3") where the door is. The height is about 8 foot!

I came across some boxes which will fit within this space (JUST). I wanted to have two of these boxes with 8 plants in each. Do you guys think these boxes are suitable?

Obviously I will have to spraypaint the sides and bottoms black and probably use masking tape to make them absolutely lightproof, I will also mylar the top to reflect light. My main query is whether the boxes are deep enough, whether leeching (of BPA etc) will occur or whether the 62 litre capacity will be too much H2O and thus huge nute use?

In that space I would go for an 8 or 10 gallon tote with 4 plants. And at that they will be crowded and it will be hard to position any kind of sidelighting. New growers often fail to plan for when plants get large and the space they will need to work with them in there. 16 plants in there means a sog with small plants.

I think it will depend upon strain to be fair. We are definitely going for yield here so the minimum number of plants we'd do in this space would be 12. We're also using a 400w HPS light as opposed to the fluoro's so canopy penetration will be there. I looked at the size of the stealth system and if you used two 6 plant reservoirs you'd have 12 plants in a smaller space under weaker lights? Is that not right? Does anyone have the exact measurements of the stealth system?

So lets say I start off with 12. Are these boxes any good as tanks?

ok. It shall definitely be 6 plants per box now, that gives an area of 27cm by 10cm for every plant at seedling level. The room dimensions i posted include the skirting board at the bottom (so add 1.5cm above that) and as I mentioned the door area gives extra space in length too, around 10cm.

Harvest target is 10 weeks so plants really won't have the opportunity to grow mammoth. Its definitely at least as much grow space as the stealth kits provide now. I think more.

My latest concern other than the suitability of these boxes as reservoirs is airflow. The cupboard has a high ceiling with an entrance to the loft in it. If I left the hatch open and had a miniature oscillating fan in there would this give me enough airflow? The other option i was considering is building a small false ceiling through which the in/out pipes would go, topped with a carbon filter and with the light attached to this false wooden ceiling too.

What do you guys think?

Cheers I'm going through it all now. Theres lots of time to research still, probs won't even think about planting til spring!

It is much easier to grow in COLD weather than Hot Weather.
