dimming to make up for lack of headroom?

so, I have a 400W MH in veg... but very limited headroom to raise the light.
If I dim the ballast...will this make my plants stretch as if I had raised the light?

I'm pretty familiar with other methods...
most of mine are topped several times in veg and get very bushy...
I also supercrop..so I have a few 90 degree turns in them to keep em at a decent height
but not much vertical growth because I cant raise my light.
the other factor is replanting...when I transplant to 5gal buckets my plants automatically get about a foot closer to the light than they were before.

The theory is: the light is at the same distance but different intensity...
in hopes that the plants will seek the same lux range that they were getting and move up?

I think all they'll do is stretch with less light. Being root bound might effectively stunt the height, though.

my roots are great....
the only reason my height is a problem is because I dont have a lot of overhead clearance..
every 5gal I empty has beautiful roots all the way to the bottom...def not a rooting problem...

I may dim the light to see.... I want to make these suckers stretch a bit more before flower...

I dimmed it to 300W last light cycle.
Will post some results....I'm interested to find out...

I meant that purposely letting them get rootbound might help keep the plants from getting too tall...
