Did you know you can be charged with a "felony" for "recording" a police officer?

In 12 states, it has become common practice to criminally charge citizens with felony Illegal wiretapping for videotaping police interactions (namely interactions that are particularly embarrassing to the department) in public locations.

People recording with a simple cell-phone video camera have been charged and convicted in these 12 states...I suggest everybody read up on this topic.

It has to do with the 2 party consent law which basically means that without the consent of both parties involved (the recorder and the recorded), it is a felony (or misdemeanor depending on the state) to record any telecommunication...which includes public officials (i.e. police officers) acting as public servants in public locations. Fucked up huh?

Cops apparently don't like being recorded because they're such upstanding members of the community that would never do anything wrong and the very impropriety of "recording" an interaction with them in and of itself is therefore criminal. Read on young grasshopper...

ehh I don't know what state your in... but that's fucking retarded.

I look at it this way, if they can record me.. a simple normal every day citizen.. then I give myself the right to record them too! Fuck them.. that's the fucking government for ya though.

Secondly.. why would you even be worried about something like this.. unless your talking to the police??? Thirdly.. why even post this dumb shit in the first place? It's got nothing to do with growing.

Firstly.. In California it's legal to record a convo. as long as one of the parties (doesn't matter if it's the officer or the citizen) is aware of the recording :]

So pretty much, a phone company can't record a convo if you or the person you call dont know about it, but if its just you that knows, its legal.

cali ftw?

It wasn't in reference to growing you moron; it was a generalized informational statement I think everyone should be aware of. I live in a big city and a few cops in recent memory have been fired for doing / saying really inappropriate shit to people during simple traffic stops. These people chose to turn on the camera on their cell phone when things got out of hand and that little media file made it's way to the news and so on. I happen to live in a state where 1 party knowledge/permission is ok; however, in 12 states it is actually a very serious offense for recording an officer without his permission/knowledge. Anybody can run into a traffic stop and nobody would possibly fucking imagine they'd be charged with a felony for simply recording what may or may not have been some questionable public servant behavior.

I don't know how you possibly derived linking marijuana with crime out of what I wrote. Perhaps that's your own predetermined disposition on the issue of marijuana; not mine. Yes folks, I know this is a marijuana site and I love this community and what it offers and facilitates; I was just blown away by what I discovered today and felt the need to share it with common minded people :) Sorry to be so off topic.
