P.T.Barnum would be so proud.

Gee, ya think there might of been a 'straw buyer' involved and the whole thing a sham? Like to work up prices for other beans?

Unless someone is incredibly rich and really incredibly stupid, I call BS on the whole thing.

That's definitely a realistic possibility.

In the stock market, there is an old trick called "painting the tape". I have some shares of stock X, and all day long I sell them to you, and then all day long you sell them back to me, back and forth.

At the end of the day, we've churned through hundreds of thousands of shares of volume. Maybe we also float a rumor at the same time. From the outside, the sudden and otherwise unexpected increase in volume makes it look like there is massive insider accumulation going on, drawing in buying interest.

That's the game anyway. . .and yeah, doing this is illegal.

I can think of other possibilities for what went down here other than a legal sale.

Just because someone legitimately bid "$X" doesn't mean the deal actually got done. Sometimes people make crazy bids with no intention of ever following up on them. Why would someone bid $20k on something with no intent on following up? They're drunk, stoned, stupid, or maybe they just want to mess with the seller.

What is the seller going to do, track down the buyer, hire a lawyer, and take the broke/drunk stoner who made the bid to court for not buying these illegal seeds? That's like trying to squeeze water out of a rock. . .even if you win the judgement (which you won't) it will cost you thousands of dollars and you still probably won't see the $20k you're owed.

The bidder may have owed the seller money, or this could be some other quid-pro-quo. You bid $20k on my seeds today, I bid $20k on your seeds tomorrow, we both 'win'.

Man, someone needs to introduce this crowd to Economics 101. Think $20,000 is too much for beans?
DON'T BUY THEM! You say $150 is all beans are worth. That is one step from saying we should pass a law
making more expensive beans illegal. Why do you think the big growers and seed producers are in business?
So a German socialist can sit back and smoke cheap? If you are too simple to understand basic supply and
demand economics then you have a problem. Leave the rest of us capitalists alone you ingrate. Trying to set
consumer prices low to win votes is a cheap trick that requires a stupid population to work. Good work standing
up for hard-working growers over those who consume only.

PS -- I apologize if, as it appears, English is not your best language. But much of your original post looks ebonic
and is hard to understand.

BigSteve.

And this directed to who?
I won't buy those beans for no damn 20,000 bucks.

The big growers and seed producers are in business for the beans they sell ranging from 30-200 at most. Even a hard working grower wouldn't sell no damn clone for 20,00,, so why buy beans made from 2 easily availible clones and a pack of aliendawgs from Cali connection? Supply an demand sounds more like stupid and dumb;)

Common sense would suggest that someone is going to try to receive as much as possible in return for their labor.
I'm guessing most of the crowd arguing for price controls are European. How is that socialist model working out for
you guys?

Compare the seed grower to the inventor. If you tell either one they can sell their product for, say, $150, you have
a lot fewer inventions and a lot fewer new seed varieties. You reds might not like admitting it, but the drive for profit
is what makes economies run. Remove the ability to sell at market forces and you remove the incentive to go out and
invent new and better things. Sorry Jack Herrer, no beans are worth that much! European freeloaders are shutting you down.
Go invent something else.

Sounds pretty stupid when someone takes your idea and develops it enough so even you guys can understand, eh? Free
market = more inventions and more opportunities for those who want to embrace them. Price controls are class warfare
to help the lazy at the expense of the majority.
