Dave's 2nd Grow - LSD in Bubble/DWC with Fogger

A few pictures that I took last Sunday:





During the water change I added a couple of fluoro lights, 125 watts each:



They're up a little higher than they should be, but I put them there in case the plant gets a lot taller. Those suckers are hot. When the temp gets too much above 75 degrees I unscrew one of them. Gotta get some more fans.

Are these leaf clusters going to turn into flowers?

Not sure whether it's light burn or chem burn. Turned off the new bulbs for now. Light is strictly from the 2' T5 light tubes for now.

Here are my plant's roots. I propped them up out of the water on the left, for a reason that I'll explain below:



Now here they are bathed in nutrified fog. This way they can get a lot of oxygen from the air:

When will the flowers finally begin to develop???

Hey, Dave. Your girl is looking really good. I love what you're doing with that fog.

Very impressed with what you have done with that T5. So much so in fact, I'm gonna recommend you to someone else.

That burn. Tell you the truth, it's hard for me to judge as well, but if I had to put money on it, I'd say it's just some minor stress from the light. My nute burn (and I know what that looks like for sure) is never so localized.

Nice root mass. That's Advanced Nutes?

So Jin pointed me this way.... Grow looks good! Your root mass is crazy! I'm wondering what you'd end up with if you propped up more of the root mass. I had thought about a fogger when pondering hydro.... I think about growing a lot!... I'm curious to see how you fair with it.

You're likely going to see flowers really showing up around week 3 or so. When you force flowering before preflowers it usually takes about 2 extra weeks to really start flowering hard. The preflowers still need to form for whatever reason. Have you spotted any yet? You'll see pistils poking out of the joints.

Yeah, I've been using only Advanced Nutes products so far, and only the "hobbyist level" formulas (still not cheap). One thing that might have helped the roots grow has been adding AN Voodoo Juice. It contains beneficial microbes that are supposed to help roots grow. The two bad things about using a fogger are that (1) it heats up the water in the res (around 77 degrees tops in my bucket) and (2) it sterilizes the water. So the latter feature should unfortunately kill all the good microbes along with the bad ones. So I add a little Voodoo Juice every day at the base of the main stem using an eye dropper. That way it soaks into the upper part of the roots ABOVE the res water.

I also think that using the fogger probably helped the roots grow as well as they have, giving them lots of oxygen with their nutes above the water line. And your tips about making lots of bubbles helped a lot. Even though my pump isn't as strong as you'd recommend (because my wife can't sleep with too much noise), I did double the bubbles on your recommendation and the roots liked that.

Thanks a lot, Jin. That's high praise coming from you. I'm really surprised myself that these T5 fluoros are working so well. Maybe it's because I can put them within an inch or two of the top leaves without burning them. And my cabinet is very small, only around 36" x 18", so the light doesn't need to go very far.

EDIT: I unscrewed those 2 new fluorescent bulbs that I added last Sunday. They were too hot and some of the upper leaves started to burn right after installing them. My girl's still growing strong from the fixture of eight 2-foot T5 lights.

I'm just scared now because the plant has grown vertically a lot since beginning the flower cycle and I'm running out of vertical headroom. I'm afraid that I might need to chop down the tops of some branches soon. Almost at the end of week 2 of flowering now.

Hey, Snickerdoodle! I've been enjoying your posts on Jin's journal. Thanks for putting my mind at ease about the absence of flowers so far! You can tell I'm a newb. I wasn't sure where to look for preflowers. I've seen some skinny little antenna things growing out of new leaf clusters, but they could be just baby leaves for all I know. The closeups that I posted yesterday show what I'm talking about.

In one of my posts from tonight (#69) I mentioned two drawbacks to using an ultrasonic fogger. But I think I've managed them ok.

I raised up the lights to the top of my cabinet to allow room for growth and the plant quickly followed them. She grew 7 inches taller in about a week or so. Now she's 27" tall and 36" wide.

Here is the inside of my cabinet. You can see that I chopped off a lot of branches last weekend. But LOTS of little new ones are sprouting up now.


Just showing an example of a new leaf cluster sprouting up in one of the "armpits" of the plant. There are lots of these all over now. I still don't see any pistols yet.
I just added 20 ml of this stuff to my 4 gallon res this afternoon. Thanks Jin for recommending it!

I've been wondering about the ppm of my nute solution. I followed the instructions on the Advanced Nutrients chart to the tee, but the EC reading is about 2300 microsiemens. That's about the same as it was for the veg phase. Does that seem too high?

KoolBloom is def the way to go.
And what your prob seeing are the 2 little female preflower LOOKING things that stick out on both sexes. (I always confuse them too, as they proceed preflowers. If you already have them, then awesome, they're prob female preflowers. If you don't, then don't confuse them.
Good luck man, I'm still liking the fogger and DWC setup! Thinking about doing soemthing close to this myself for my next grow.

OOOOH, is that Liquid Koolbloom I see?

Also, those are pre-flowers alright. I can clearly see the big ol' hairs pokin' in your first photo. My eye has become super trained. I can spot hairs on a female (when growing from a seed, because clones show female hairs even in veg) even when they are almost too small to see with the naked eye. Ah, those days of sexing seed plants... nostalgic.

Edit: also note that the fresh developing leaves of your tops have started that "cupping" or "praying" shape. That's where the big nugs develop. I really wouldn't mind stuffing some of that in my vape when it's done. LSD, huh? hmmm. Looking lush. I'm impressed by the detail in the deeply serrated leaf edges. You can tell that the plant is of superior genetics because of the fine detail in the development of the leaves. You're doing great. Keep it up. Again, I wish I could smoke it. I can already tell it's gonna be great weed.

Edit again (sorry, high and having afterthoughts): If you're worried about some of your taller branches getting too close to light (something I'm all too familiar with), I see easy opportunity for late lst. You could easily tie a cotton string to those and fasten them downward. This will tend to open up the entire bush structure, giving you more exposure and power to the smaller inner sub-tops. This improves the canopy and consequently yield... not to mention keeping your highest tops safe (safer) from burning. ** you get two stars for your choice in clippers. I have the spring loaded Fiskars too. Isn't it great? I don't need a grinder because of it. Mine serves double duty as a bud grinder when smoking. Those blades are indestructible and they never get dull. A nice piece of engineering. You don't want to trim bud for 16 hours with anything less imo.

Goddammit! Edit Again! Your nute reading question. If you haven't drastically increased the dissolved solids in your res from what they were in late veg, you should be fine. Increase gradually with a smaller res like yours... you can't go as cowboy as me. But ALWAYS watch your plant carefully. One of the greatest advantages to growing hydro is the speed of plant reaction. Meaning if you fuck something up, you'll see it faster and you can correct it virtually immediately by various remedial measures. Something soil growers (sorry Snicker and Chairman...but i bet the two of you would be great at hydro) have a harder time with because of slower plant reaction to remedial measures. And I read horror stories here of people having to manually flush like nine gallons of water through each of their many soil pots? Back breaking. I love smoking a good soil grow, but I could never do it. I'm pretty lame when it comes to that lol.

FINAL EDIT I PROMISE:
A related note on soil vs. hydro. Soil, as they say, is the stuff of mother earth. So please don't take me for one of those hydro, know-it-all snobs. I realize there is something more of an artificial element to water growing with concentrated liquid nutrient, and nothing really beats say a pure organic soil grown bud in the hands of a true master. The nuances from having been grown in the more natural way they were intended does have an impact on overall quality. The yield may not be as crazy, but there's something to be said for quality over quantity. Hydro growing is great for me because 1. I'm incompetent with soil. I've tried it in the past and have done some pretty embarrassing shite. Nute-lock, I hate you. 2. I'm lazy. I actually do believe that hydro, contrary to popular belief, is much, much easier than soil. 3. See number 2. Hydro is EASIER than soil. I don't care what anyone says. Snicker and Chairman, a low pro tub from your local walmart... a small 'steamer' setup not unlike Dave's? Hmmmm? Lol.
