pictures would help but it sounds like mold or more specifically white powdery mildew
but without pics we are really at a loss to properly diagnose.

to fix it put it in the freezer for a while. Happened to me when i tried to rehydrate and left it wet. Put it in the freezer thinking it was pretty much done for and then looked at it one day and its fine.
