CXB3590 Setup Questions

Hi All,

I've been out of the game for a while but with the recent changes in legislation in my state, it's time to get back on the horse.

It didn't take long to figure out that if you're trying to run an efficient, high lumen/watt system and don't mind some DIY, COB LEDs are the way to go. I just ordered 8 CXB3590s (5-3500K and 3-6500K) and will be running them at 1400 mA using 2 HLG-185H-C1400Bs. I also have 8 reflectors (KB-D82-90RF) similar to the Angelina reflectors that Robin tested in his Optics experiment (https://www.rollitup.org/t/lens-and-reflector-optics-for-cob.893660/). Huge props to him for this research.

I've got a 4x6 grow area with the potential to easily expand to 4x8 that will be lined with either panda film or mylar. I'll start with 12 plants during veg of which 6 will go to flower and 6 will remain in veg. I plan to either SCROG or do some agressive tying down to spread these plants out. I plan to actively cool these light arrays once they're built and have based the original size of the 5.88"x38" sink on GrowMau5's youtube series. Now on to my question:

What's the most efficient shape for a heat sink configuration that would distribute the light from these 8 COBs? I want to maximize the PPFD in the grow area and minimize the amount of light on the periphery.

Here are 3 ideas I have for hanging light fixtures. The large boxes are heat sinks and the small boxes are COBs. I would love to hear some feedback from growers who've done this kind of work before. This is assuming that each heat sink piece has the same surface area (similar fin size). Much appreciated.

I have 8 of the CPX 3950 as well . Mine are using the pin style individual heatsinks. One per cob. Not sure about the efficiency of using the pin heatsinks vs. The extruded aluminum bar

Thanks Simon. What model heat sink are you using? Trying not to break the bank but am interested to know how much they run. Active or passive cooling?

Sorry bout that @BornGreen1987 should have posted that earlier, they're Cooliance 100mm black anodized aluminum pin cushion heatsink passive cooled. Don't know how much they cost, mine came in a timberkit688.jpg

I'm running the same shit as you only I chose 3000k since its strictly for my flower tent (4x8 w/ other half 600w hps) You should be stoked with it ! Happy growing ! 8-)

@SimonBarSinister Thanks for the recommendation. Those are a little expensive so I might go for the cheaper Chinese alternative on Alibaba but definitely going with CXBs! Any info on 2700Ks vs 3000Ks?

I know it has slightly more red. I chose the 3000k because its for my flower room only. Also they were out of the 2700's . i believe i take a 8-9% decrease in lumens compared w/ 3500k, dont know if that decrease in lumens increases as the kelvins decrease
