Cuttings w/Heat Mat Not Cloning

I seem to be doing everything right, but I'm having no luck.

I have 35 cuttings and not has rooted. This is my 5th attempt and so far only two attempts have worked, both with 50-60% of the cuttings having rooted.

I keep them moist, not wet, I have a heat mat which keeps the bottom warm.. I have great airflow, I keep one 20w CFL so it's not overly lit.

What else is there?

The cubes/plugs your rooting in should be warm when you feel them, not hot, and definately not cold. You think you got that part rite?
I personally don't use heating matts. Instead, i keep the cloning box/area at about 85F ;-)

Are you using any kind of cloning solution? And what are they doing? Are they wilting and falling over? Or are they standing but just not producing any roots? Misting the leaves will keep them satisfied until they establish roots. But keep in mind, some strains are just a bitch to clone. Good luck, my friend.

I would not say they're hot. The mats are kind of hot, but the cubes are definitely warm.

My clone box is at around 85F, and the results without a heat mat were identical.

I'm using Clonex. I dipped the cuttings in it after I scraped the sides and then placed them in the cubes.

They're almost entirely standing tall. Some of the leaves are a bit wilty, but they were like that when I picked them. It's just how those tiny leaves are.

I used to mist the leaves, but they're never wilting enough for that anymore.

I'm cloning White Widow. Is that a notoriously hard strain to clone?

EDIT: I just threw away 1/4 of my cuttings because they had stem rot or a big chunk of mold on the top.. is it because I kept the humidity dome on 24/7?

I scrape some girth off my cuts also(opposing sides). Been doing it that way for Bout 23 yrs. It usually is gonna speed things up. I likey!
Don't spray the cuts with water. But rather, spray dome at first, and when/if needed, for the first few days. All you need is a little moisture on the walls of dome, to keep them happy(at first)
Here's what i do: all vents closed for first 5 days. Then start opening them up gradually. Don't put too many cuts in a tray. I only do 24-30 a tray.
^^^^this will help with the loss of clones due to melting/rotting on you :-)
Lift dome, and blow on them 1-2 times a day also;-)

A heat mat for clones? New to me. I just use little Styrofoam cups and coco with a 2 litter bottle cut in half for a humidity dome. Works 100%
It's important to place to cutting in water immediately after you cut it. I put a few drops of k-l-n in the solution. Not sure if it's needed but it doesn't seem to hurt and my results are pretty consistent.

Your method is the same as mine and I get a 90% success rate with and without rooting gel.
The only difference is I put a airstone in a small tray of water inside the cutting tray
to keep the dome humidified without having to spray the inside of the dome.
I keep the heat mat on the low setting.

You know, it is amazingly fucking lame how some of the new trays/liners and dome combos out there nowadays don't fit snug. A good snug combo holds plenty humidity, from my experience.

One 20w cfl? 30+ cuttings... get real. Can u give em a lil more light? Use the ambient heat off the lights, lose the heating mat... I run just as many clones if not more under a COUPLE of 4' t5 tubes... imo 20w ain't shit for that much spread... g'luck!

Good call!
My personal favorite is a t12 fixture( 4' - two bulb) about 14" above 2 trays. Not to little, not to much.

...yep I keep them lights OFF the cuttings-- 18"-24", mist 1-2x a day & ignore em

You're absolutely correct, I had one that with one cup of water in the tray I'd have plenty of humanity stuck to the dome, I've just purchased a new one because my dome was cracked. the new one does not hold any moisture and it's because the dome does sit snug under tray…...:wall:

I'm getting mixed messages on various forums.

Some people say I should ditch the heat mat and the humidity dome and limit the light and other people say to keep the heatmat and dome and double the light..

make sure u are using a very sharp blade to take cuttings, i use a fresh razor blade. Also put them DIRECTLY into water or the cube when u cut them, if they get air in the stem they are dead.

What if I cut an entire stem and leave it outside for 10 minutes, then cut it into individual parts and directly put them into water? Will that work?

the bottom clone will be bad, but the rest should be fine, that being said i would just drop the stem in a cup of water in the meantime, no reason not too.

I get 90+% keepers even when i take from flowering plants, the secret is to keep the air VERY humid. A dome is not even enough i still spray the inside of the dome and the plants as often as i can, if its a weekend and i aint got shit going on i literally mist the dome every time i pee. I also use rooting hormone, though it is absolutely un-needed just cuz i think it helps them start faster, cloned plants r much weaker in the root department than seed plants to begin with. Take clones that have a strong woody stem, if the stem cracks the cutting is dead.

2014-08-10 00.14.05.jpg I like cloning in these 89 cents each with the lid...just turn them upside down ....u can't take big clones in these tho... but they have taller boxes at Walmart if necessary. no heating matt.. Some Olivias cloning solution and some take root rooting powder from walmart.works great I see roots in 10 to 14 days ... I don't open the lid for the first 5 days. ..
