Get a good filter.
If you build it, use good carbon. I just bought this.

I have a cheap ventech filter and a couple phresh filters. The phresh last longer. The ventech lasted about six months. Phresh, 12 to 18 months.
My next piece of advice is to go oversize on the filter. If you got a 4in fan, use a six or eight inch filter. I don't care what is advised.
I just got done with a strain that one filter was not enough. I put a filter on each side of the fan. Sucking in one, blowing out the other. It worked great. I'm going to order an 8 inch filter for my 4 inch fan. I can pop the rivets and replace the carbon as needed.
I'm going to take the extra filters I have and make scrubbers. I will use a bathroom vent and one filter. I will buy some 10 inch boards and build a fake speaker box with the mesh in the front. I will put one in the grow room and one in the room where my central heat and air intake is.
You can also refresh the carbon in your filter. Everywhere I read said you needed temps above 500 degrees. You don't.
Pop the rivets off the side of the filer with flange. Dump the carbon out of the filter into a strainer. Run water through the carbon and turn with your hand. Wash it good. Pour carbon into turkey pans. The cheap throw away kind. Make sure to have a one inch layer in each pan. Put in oven and turn to highest setting. It will stink god awful. Bake for 4-5 hours. Stir the carbon a few times during the process. I got pics in my sig link.
My neighbor was throwing an old stove top oven. The oven works but eyes quit on the stove top. I put it my out building where I put the lawn mower and tiller. I'm going to wire it to run both the top and bottom elements in the oven. I will line it with those fire brick for wood burners. It will make a good oven for my filters.
Oh and one more thing. When you take your filter apart, throw that cloth liner away. Buy some metal window screen to replace it. After that just spray with water hose and stick in the oven.
