The Crew Dragon launch is also the first American solo flight in nine years. All this time, NASA astronauts have been climbing into orbit on the Russian Soyuz. However, Crew Dragon has already flown to the ISS. In March 2019, an automatic test flight was completed. There was no crew on board the ship however there was space for seven people. The device ascended into orbit and successfully docked with the station, delivering various cargoes and a dummy named Ripley (named after the heroine Sigourney Weaver from the movie "Alien"). Then the flight went off without incident, but more than a year had passed before the next launch with a real crew on board.
