We get those king fish and snapper here in new zealand. By far they're the most hyped about fish here hah But you get them closer to shore, some people fish for them of the rocks and it can be tough becasue the kingys as we call them will quite easily snap you of on a rock or something so its quite a challenege :)
Yep for sure we call them kingys to really tasty smoked I reckon

yellows are my favorite fish to eat. Great grilled or sashimi. Smoked is just an added benefit . They love rocks and pull like a SOB , they are all so found off shore under floating kelp or other objects. I can't believe you don't like fishing them Rube.

Never said I dont like fishing for them......I just target other species and do well on them all the time so ive never bothered chasing them.
If I want kingfish I wouldnt have to put the boat in the water they can be caught of the jetty here around wood structures.

In Baja you can rent a 'Panga' for $75 a day & fish the reefs & kelp patties. MahiMahi are fun to catch on light tackle & taste great too...

One of the best Baja Panga trips I took I hooked & lost about 50 fish & only caught 1. We were fishing for Giant Black Sea bass. We were only fishing in 50' of water over reefs. We had to use our heaviest gear (Marlin trolling rods)& slam the drags shut, & still couldn't stop them...these were 300-500lb fish. They would dart out & grab the lobster tails we used as bait & be back in their hole before you knew it. Your only chance was to stop the initial charge.......good luck with that...
The 1 we landed was a baby...150lbs.....

We were anchored up one day down on the Uncle sam bank fishing Tuna. A couple white fish came up on the yoyo irons smashed. My buddy I was working with Baited one and dropped it down. Bam . 500 # BSB. So a couple of other passangers tried it and Bamm, two more hit the deck. I think by the end of the day we had 30 of the big bastards on the boat. Imagine what it would be like to be down there with that many of them ? I glad they are protected now.

that didn't help you guys from getting rocked . I think the only reason that bite stopped is we were in 300 plus feet of water so there air bladders were blowing up .we pulled anchor to go get a floater and never got back on them right.
I have had corbina in the salton sea pull my skiff around .

on another trip we were at Cedros Island in the harbor at the Salt plant at night to make bait. My anchor watch was from 2-4 am. I had specific instructions to wake the Skipper up if the bait stops biting. Well it did but only cause a school of 100# plus Broom tail and goliath grouper moved in. We knocked the piss out of them. When I woke my buddy up for his watch he was bummed I didn't wake him up earlier. Boy I got in a lot of trouble but is was awesome ! I got in trouble 1 for not moving the boat 2 for filling up a half a fish hold with grouper. lol
I seen some stuff I will never forget on the long range boats . We fished yellow tail for 3 days straight on a 5 day with out ever pulling the hook. filled all 5 fish holds. when you looked over the side you would swear you could walk on them. Like cord wood. . Been in 200 # Blue fin bites of the same kind. If you have ever seen that much tonnage under the boat it is something you will never forget.

seen a manaray swim under the boat and our Beam is 26 ft. There was wing tips on each side of the boat.

Pargo/dogtooth

I got a 60 # Pargo on a bank outside of Cabo. Every other thing I hooked Rocked me on a button downed 80# outfit.
