Considering on making DWC Bubblers and selling on Internet for supplemental income

For supplemental income to start, but with the possibility of expansion and offering different grow supplies later on if things go well.

I would want to find wholesale suppliers for the components I need and buy in bulk.Things like air pumps, air stones, tubing, net pots, hydroton , rockwool cubes, starter bottles of nutrients.

Then find another supplier for plastic totes like a big plastic storage container dealer.

I have a few thousand saved up to get me started in this. Another plus is I live in Colorado which is a MMJ state and I see people on Craigslist in my area all the time selling hydro systems. I know there's a big market for it.

I was thinking of just sticking with simple small scale DWC Bubbler systems, focusing on the small closet grower, but in no way having any word reference even remotely to do with anything 420 related for legal safety.

To start out with , maybe just having 3 models to choose from using just 10 gallon plastic tote containers as the main container in which I could make 3 models from, 1 model could be a 2-plant Bubbler using 5" net pots, the 2nd model could be a 4-plant Bubbler using 3" net pots, and the 3rd model could be a 6-plant Bubbler also using 3" net pots.I'm not set on using these configurations but using them just as examples.

If things went well I could branch out and offer more configurations or even take things to a whole bigger level and become an Internet based hydro and grow supply dealer focusing on the small-scale budget grower (because I see a lot of them online)

I've been seriously thinking about this a lot lately with so much in the news about MMJ bills being fought for in non-MMJ states, and then with California trying to pass legalization for recreational users that's going to trigger great legalization efforts nationwide. It's going to create more growers. The demand for Hydro and grow supplies is about to boom and I see opportunity.

I'm just looking at this right now as a supplemental income but if I under cut the competition by a few dollars I've seen on the Internet who are selling similar DWC Bubblers, and also sell decent products and not use crap pumps and air stones and make sure my systems don't leak....then after many months when sales increase by word of mouth spreading of my credibility from customers, my foundation will be solid enough to go bigger and I could offer more grow supplies as the sells get better,in example> reflectors, bulbs, ballasts, inline fans, ect. BUT....with the economy still real bad I could tailor my products just focusing on the small-scale low budget grower because the market would always be there for the small-scale budget grower.I know..because I am one :-P

I see MMJ spreading to more states in the near future as well as stronger legalization pressure, and a person who has basic growing supplies to sell at fair prices could make great money with a strong hungry demand for those supplies.

It takes money to make money, and right now I do have enough to get what I would like to get started up and going. If by chance it never turns into something big, I know I could still make a small profit and just keep it as a "just-on-the-side" supplemental income maker.

I don't see how I could really lose at this idea. The earning potential is there. Whether it made me only just $500 a month making and selling DWC Bubblers or $5,000 a month selling various growing systems and supplies, I see an earning potential either way.

Any suggestions ,comments, or insults, all are appreciated.

Its a good idea, the only thing you have to worry about is actually selling the systems.
I mean it would suck to put all this money and time into buying the materials and building the systems, to sell one or two a month.

I would say give it a try with a dozen systems, then see what the market is like before you go dropping a few grand on it

Yeah awesome idea man! As the previous poster said the only real issue is making sure you can reach your customers. With some clever promotion though I could see this being very popular :-P

plus the much vaunted "word of mouth" isn't going to push your business like you want, but may increase law enforcement scrutiny that you really don't want right when you are starting off... try ads in mother earth monthly and back to earth type magazines... if you take out an ad, try to get it reviewed by the magazine as well... also high schools and middle schools like to have experiments for the kids to do, how about how to grow cherry tomatoes indoors in winter? approach a science teacher or two, and see what happens... good luck...

whoever said word of mouth won't get you promotion is a dumbass...

the best marketers in the world know very well that what people are saying about you is the leading driver of brand value.

word of mouth is not to be taken lightly. it's the most efficient form of marketing, it's free, and it works.

This is a wonderful idea! I would suggest that you make a website for your product, and market it from there. Online you can reach not only a local audience, but a nationwide audience who may have intrest in your product. With ecommerce you can sell your product 24/7/365! I would definately keep it "clean" and legal. No mention of illegal activities or even mmj activities!

There are many people, myself included who are intrested in a product like this that can be "customized" to their needs, that does not cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

This is a great idea, I'd buy it!

TIP: Blogspot.com sells domains for 10 dollars(If it's available) and it's very easy to update, customize and expand with it's templates and easy-to-do editing.

Good luck mate, Sub'd for interest!

You system from page 1 is kind of weak, I wouldn't want it for free.
Your opinion , lets see what you got for a system. Those totes grew some fine ass weed, 5 foot plants. Still using them to this day. what you got? Some interesting shit soon to come and it will be all diy.

Sorry guy I don't see the benefit of putting a pump that is going to add heat to the thing so you can have sprinklers in a few inches. Just because you see a bad design doesn't mean you have to copy it. Those things were put out when aero was the rage and kids were shelling out money for anything aero. I'm sure you can find a few people to buy something like that if they don't want to spend the money on tools. Hole cutters can be expensive and if somebody doesn't like tools there is a market. Take out the sprinkler and make a simple dwc cooler though.

The benefits are many, beats hell out of growing shit in an aquarium(DWC), done side by side and the totes out perform a simple DWC bucket every-fucking-time. The design I came up with is totally different than anyones, The plumbing is designed to support the lid which in turn support a huge ass plant, your buckets are simple an obsolete . Say what you want its only opinion until you've actually seen a side by side comparison and I have. The lid on that specific tote is real handy too, stick with your silly little buckets. And as for heat those little pumps really don't contribute much to that , your uninsulated buckets don't do shit for heat either btw, I'm moving to all igloo coolers and they WILL have water pumps and all the sprayers I can stick in them.
