Computer Fan Wiring

No you can't just plug it into an extension cord. You need a transformer to lower the input from 110v down to the 12v it runs on.

If you just hook it up to a regualr extension cords you are going to have problems, unless you are hooking it up the power supply for the computer.

Get a 12v adapter for like 10 bucks at wal mart, cut the end off and hook your fan up to that.

no disrespect fellas thankyou both for the info but i think more input would help clear things up .

any electricialy inclined person let me know if this set-up is o.k........

"found a old nidec alpha v TA450 cpu fan. the fan is AC (ac is always red alpha,dc is green beta right?) found the old specs online V=115 mA=110/104

adaptor is from old modem
ac adaptor input=120vac 100mA output= 12vdc 500mA

i'm going to strip both and match wires.

Q: the fan has another wire ( ground ) and the adaptor has only two wires should i just leave the ground wire alone"

thanks again everyone

I'm not sure where you're getting the ac specs, but that sounds like a dc fan.. I've never seen an ac pc fan, only ac fans that look like big pc fans..
pc fans typically have red/black/yellow = 5V/GND/12V.. on the adapter black is gnd/negative, and if its marked differently at all, the adapter's 12V output will have a white stripe.. You want to hook into the yellow & black, you can't hurt anything by hooking the fan to the adapter backwards, you can try it either way if the wires aren't marked, it will only work when you hook it up right..
(And the 12V out of the adapter is pretty harmless to your fingers, just try not to short the wires..
For the record, with 120V AC white is 'neutral', black is hot, and green is the 'dedicated' ground.. You gotta know your wire colors, and know that you can never really trust them regardless when playing with electricity..

Not quite sure about this one but i can't seem to find a wholesaler for pc fans that have any reasonable cfm rating. I found some coolermaster models that push 110 cfm but thats brand new high end parts. Most generic models only seem to have between 20 and 50 cfm rating for 80-92mm case fans. Somebody please correct me if im wrong in any way or point me in the direction to find these cheap efficient fans, thanks to all.

Most ppl approach pc fans from the POV that they're small time & ghetto, and just don't want to buy real fans..
I agree, some pc style fans are MUCH better than others, but AFAIK there is no way to get those cheap..
Might as well take the jump up to a small squirrel-cage/centrifugal for the cost..

Isnt Red normally the power wire, and Black is the negative (u know, black being an Earth colour and all)..

Red is power/5V, black is ground, and yellow is power/12V if there are three wires.. If there are only two then just ignore the missing yellow wire..
And voltage isn't critical.. Play around anywhere from 1/2 - 2x the rated voltage..

i agree to an existent. I'f they didn't know and you kept a clean mouth you could help the family greatly. yes its very disrespectful but with this economy its hard for people and marijuana is always going to be worth green. my mom kicked me out when she found my box but it wasn't a problem i moved to my girlfriends house =) but she ended up finding the box as well but now the box is at a safe spot where neither the parents care

anyways im just trying to say if you gave your mom 2 grand one day and be like here this is for bills dont ask question you coupld explaiin the hole growing thing as long as you're not blowing out the house you dont want any heat on you any more then your parents

I can't comprehend that being sufficient for anything except a clone box with a single fluoro.. Are you taking temps at 'canopy' level??
