hey,
i have just joined this forum looking for a little information i have spent the last couple of hours searching for what i was looking for but not had any success (so sorry if this is posted allot on here).

ok so to start with i am a complete newbie to this so i am only looking to start off with the real basics! seriously like 1-3 plants indoors and possibly in a box in the corner of a room?

ok so here we go;
this is really just like an experiment for me, i have always wanted to try growing weed but never done it. now i have this little bag of seeds in my smoking box with two different types of seeds one lot was from a friend who went to Ghana on holiday and brought back some seeds (he grew some and boy was that shit good!) and the rest are from when my friend brought round some green he picked up down south which was the bomb but had a shit load of seeds init... (now i guess it wasn't the best idea to mix the two together but i never even thought about it before now)

now as far as things go all i have would be plant pots and soil...

i am really looking for the very basics here and i have never done any gardening before (although i have worked vegetable gardens before digging potatoes and picking fruit and veg, but im not sure how relevant that will be to this...)

one of my main questions would be what sort of light would i need? (yes i realise that could be a stupid question but this is the sort of level i am at)
please help i would really love to give this a try and if this works out i love to start trying out different ways of growing!

but you have to walk before you can run!

thanks in advance!

No dumb questions. Best light overall for you - a 400-watt high pressure sodium. Soil - Fox Farms Ocean Forest. With that you don't worry about fertilizers for a month. Containers - 3 gallon because you can do your complete grow in them. Seeds - buy online from Attitude or Herbie's Headshop or Growshop Alien. Buy a few 6500 Kelvin compact fluorescents to sprout your seeds under, some potting soil and peat cups.

Easy way to grow?
Personally, Im a fan of Aerogardens. Very user friendly. Basically "plug-n-play." To improve the grow/yield you can add extra light, better nutes, etc.

hi, thanks for all the help guys!!!
i guess i should start a the basics of sprouting seeds... lets just say i don't live in the warmest of houses so is there any suggestions of how to keep the temp up just around the seed so i don't have to heat the whole house? (i thought it had to be dark to sprout seeds?
cheers for the advice on the seeds aswell hotrod... (i heard if they float they are duds aswell?)

those Aerogardens look interesting... anyone ever used one before? a little expensive but does look like it would make it really newbie friendly... and you can get them cheaper on the old fleabay

Get some seeds from attitude seed company , use usps int express option so you can track them. Buy a seed dome from lowes or home depot and get seedling soil, very important. Sprout your seeds in the dome, than trasnplant them to solo cups using the same seedling soil. Put holes in the bottom the the solo cups and when you see roots begin to come out of those holes it is time to transplant them to the pot they will live in. Use any lamp you have around the house to heat the seedling dome. Now get some Happy Frog Soil for the pots. This soil has time release nutes and I dont have to use much nutes, I do use them I bought fox farms and when I need it works fine.

The 400 hps is the best you can go to amazon and get one delivered with two bulbs and the balast and the hangers and the timers for about 130 bucks.

Check back once you have the seedlings ready to go in the pots for proper transplant instructions, good luck have fun.

Just put some seeds on wet paper towel, fold it over and then fold aluminum foil around it. After 2 or more days, you will see a white taproot emerging. Carefully take the seed and put it in a red solo cup with drainage holes cit into the bottom, full of FFOF, covering the seed with only about 1/4" of soil. Water it. Put it under your CFL's/Flouros......after the seedling emerges, water it sparingly and only when the cup feels very light. When you see roots trying to poke out through the drainage holes, let the cup dry out and then transplant in larger containers. That whole process should take 3-4 weeks, giving you time to get your grow box/tent all set-up and learn more about what to do next.

Research, research, research. No question is too dumb.....OK, some questions are.....pics always help people give you good advice here.

Well I think most people start with CFLs, but they really aren't all that great for growing in my experience..some people have luck with it, but I never did really...but with my 400w Metal Halide for veg growth and my 400w CMH for flowering do the trick very well...but it is easier to start out small and go up...I mean 2 400w lights is still small, but you know what I mean...Don't go buy all this expensive equipment before you know if this is even something you really want to do...but you need a lot of CFLs or one larger HiD light, you will need a fan to blow on the plants to make them stronger...you also need ventilation to keep things cool and fresh...and I guess that is a start....nutes come a little later...don't plant the seed and then nute it like some people do and then wonder what is wrong with their plant...
And the best best best thing you can do starting out besides having high powered lights is to have a really goo premium organic soil and some extra perlite to mix in...MJ doesn't like to have her roots too wet for very long, so you can't go wrong with adding perlite...Aw, well you gotta get a little farther before a whole lot of this matters.

Aerogardens are too small really for what we like to do around here...i mean you could have a teeny tiny aero bonzai pot plant, but it seems kind of like a waste...if you get some large lights you won't have to worry about the heat in the grow, it will supply all you need and then some. Lol. but as for starting seeds I have the best luck using a small plastic bathroom cup of soil, or like a solo cup of soil, or jiffy pucks...I don't paper towel my seeds usually, but I have before, but I get better results with less danger of killing my tiny new sprouts if I put them straight into some soil or some type of easy to move around medium...the paper towel thing is great if you have no patience, but it truly is better to just put the seeds into soil and then wait...
the paper towel method can go wrong in a number of ways...If you keep the paper towel too wet your sprouts will be less healthy than they could have been...sometimes people put the paper towel and seeds on top of their water heater, or cable box and if that piece of equipment gets too hot, then it ruins all your seeds or sprouts...if you forget it for too long the paper towel can dry out...so I have found the easiest way is to take as many jiffy pucks as seeds you want to plant...puff them up with plain water and then put the seeds into the puck, then I put the puck in a ziploc bag and write on the outside of the bag or cup what the seed inside is...anyway I leave the pucks and bags on top of my light, and in 2 or 3 days I get a sprout coming up, so then you take off the bag and let it grow...

If you have a 400w then you can just use that for sprouting...you would be amazed what the extra heat does to the germination times.

Aerogardens work GREAT for what we grow around here. Check you-tube, there alot of success using AGs. Also, the Aerogardners thread has some good stuff there.
I personally just harvested my 1st ever grow in an AG3. Small harvest but a great way to learn basics. I just upgraded to the AG Extra.

WOW this had had a great response! almost to good! so many different ways... i guess i should spend some time and plan a space for it and then decide which route im going to take...
another thing i was curious about was i had seen and heard about led lamps being used? has anyone tried that? because surely that would save a heck of allot on the electricity bill, no?

i am still on the fence about Aerogardens as for the money couldn't you just buy a couple of lamps and some soil and have the same outcome? or am i missing something? or is it just the ease of use that is so attractive for the aerogarden users?

how long did it take from seed to bud in the Aerogarden? and what size crop from how many plants did you get?

and if i go soil is it really important to buy premium soil or can i just use household compost?

thanks allot guys!

also i know this might sound a little crazy but has anyone ever tried growing plants more vertically so it spreads out wider like a bush and only get to mabye 1-2 ft tall? or is that crazy talk?
cheers,
maumau

wow reading up those aerogardens and they look amazing... i think this will be the way to go for me... then maybe get a mother plant going in the future and just have clones going in the aerogarden...
anyone who has experience with these machines i would love your input! what nutes to uses? and what settings you have it on? also anyone know where i can get em cheep? i have seen the fleabay... and are they noisy? i hear they have a pump in them...

thanks again for everyones help but i think i have found the way for me!

thanks,
maumau

No they're not noisy. I have mine set on "tomatoes". Last grow I used XNUTRIENTS MICRO/GROW/BLOOM. Probably will use the same this time. Make sure to get a 6-7 pod model. But, dont use 6-7 seeds, Id say 3 maybe 4 max (from what Ive seen). Also you should think about a clamp light or 2 so you can add lights during flower.
Again, check you-tube for Aerogarden grows...alot of good stuff there.
Hope this helps

i have heard quite conflicting stories about it... who much do you crop per plant if you have 3-4? i was thinking maybe just 1-2 nice bushy plants i have seen people claiming 7grams to an ounce per plant...
thats good about the noise as i was thinking it would go im my bedroom...

Im no pro, far from it.
I just got 8g dried off 1 plant in my AG3. The yield depends on ALOT of different factors. Lights, nutes, temp, humidity, etc. The bigger AG units should produce more than what I got in the AG3.
About putting it in your room, the sound shouldnt be a problem, but, come flower time you need a place where it'll be in COMP[LETE darkness (no light leaks)during the 12 hrs of lights out.

thanks allot guys!

I have to say that premium soil is very very important when growing in soil.
