HYPOTHETICALLY...if I was so low on money that I can't even get soil atm but can't wait to start my new grow...can I use some soil from...outside? How bad is that?

You COULD but soil is super cheap. Like 4 dollars. But i have heard if you absolutely need to use outdoor soil to bake it in the oven. I wouldn't partake in that, The mess isn't worth 4 dollars. There probably is a better way but that's my contribution :D

No soil worth a shit is $4.00. Sorry. Turn your oven on to 350 degrees. Open your windows. Put your soil in the oven spread evenly on cookie sheets or in a big casserole. Place in the oven. Go for a walk. Internal temps need to reach a sustained 165 F temp for an hour. Higher is fine. This kills everything. Period. Nematodes, beneficial bacteria, grubs, plant viruses etc. Now mix with perlite or vermiculite or even saw dust from NON-TREATED wood for drainage. Then get a job and buy your good soil after growing these out.

Because there is a balanced ecosystem outside. When you bring the soil inside, you disrupt that balance. Say for instance you bring in spider mites with the soil but none of it's natural predators where in that soil. Not sterilizing the soil leads to a lot of problems mold, bugs, or otherwise.
