Commercial Grower Genetics

Hey Guys,

I am trying to begin my research for Strains and Genetic Companies for commercial production. I was wondering if anyone knew how larger companies went about securing seeds or if there are any favoured genetic companies used by commercial growers.

If anyone also has tried any very high THC/Terpene strains recently from reputable growers I would love to hear/see how they were!

Thanks for the help guys.

I recently saw a medium sized facility running brother’s Grimm on IG. Mr. Soul definitely has solid uniform genetics that makes it easy to fill a room from seed

Also, does anyone know what are considered to be the top strains amongst breeders? I'm sure it would be things like the cannabis cup winners etc. but their must be some hidden gems here and there

Read up on the threads here on the forums. You sound brand new to all of this, fresh out of an investor meeting. Weed is subjective, and 'elite' cuts are either held tightly, or sold for top $$$ on clone websites, sometimes mis-labeled, sometimes with infections, sometimes as a clean gem. You'll have to get your hands dirty and figure out which strains work best for your clients as you go forward through trial and error. There's bag appeal, different smell profiles, taste profiles, effects, bud that washes vs bud that flowers, purple vs green (market-dependent), clone-only vs pheno-hunt exclusives, 12-weekers, 7-weekers, on and on. Find some highly rated threads and breeders and just start buying stuff up to pheno-hunt with. The larger your grow space, the faster you can hunt through packs to get some gems under your belt. Keep a clone of everything you run, and I mean everything, just in case it's the next gem. Best of luck brother.

Hey Aheadatime,

Thanks for the advice buddy. Do you grow commercially?

And yes, my country hasn't even legalized medical cannabis so I'm prepping. I know my way around the plant and I'm great at building facilities and logistics (I'm an engineer by trade). I live in the Caribbean so the only way I'm getting a clone is illegally on a boat drive from Miami (seriously considering that).

As far as premium strain hunting, yes, I am fresh off that boat. What I've been doing recently is looking at smaller companies on Instagram who don't do all of their breeding in-house and looking at the breeders and strains they use. Right now I'm prioritizing super high THC strains - 30% Plus - because unfortunately, that's the only thing the market is going to appreciate in the early stages.

Hopefully, after a couple of years, I can start prioritizing flavor (I personally dislike high THC strains).

It seems that even in North America, the high THC strains/ strong brands are the only ones that get sold higher than mids due to the glut of low-quality 20%ers. I really wish the community would wise up. But hey, this is always going to be the direction capitalism takes a product.

If you have any more info I'd love to hear about it! Looking for as much information as I can get.

Thanks again buddy

Yes I do. I don't find that % matters in my markets, outside of a few vendors who don't know what they're doing. If your area truly only looks for numbers, then ignore my advice, and hunt for numbers. MAC1 and gg4, as saturated as they are, provide good numbers consistently. To avoid being mundane, hunt through their crosses instead of s1's. Best of luck in your hunting.

Hopefully, we end up like yours and they won't care for numbers too much but from the product I've put out to friends, it's all most people tend to worry about.

Also, if you don't mind me asking, any advice for a beginner?

I'll be polite and tell you to maybe look into another industry. I work in the legal market in Canada and if your asking these types of questions you have no business starting an LP. There's so many folks like you here who think they can just up and start a company and look at it like printing money.

The questions your asking are so basic you would be wise to do 4-5 years of research and then come back. Comments like focusing on 30% strains is so stupid and just shows a lack of proper understanding of Cannabis.

Judging someone and coming to a conclusion like that over one question is 1. foolish cause you know less about me than I do about strains 2. rude.

Thanks for stopping by the thread.

You may have some luck doing a little research: choose a US state with a legal market, look for one of the top rated dispensaries in that state, and see what they sell. Pick a few that aren't generic strain names and do a web search to see who made the seeds. At least in Massachusetts (a "seed-to-sale" state) the initial wholesale producers seem to largely grow plants from one breeder, e.g. I know "The Heirloom Collective" (note the acronym) seem to largely grow from Cannarado beans.

Should probably also do a little research on what's easy or hard to obtain in your location as it sounds like you might be outside the US.

Hey YardG,

Thanks, man. Yes, I am in the Caribbean lol but seeds shouldn't be an issue - I go to school in the US. As far as strains go, I think my issue is more about what strains should I offer. In the past, it's been easier because whatever I grow and sell to people I get feedback on and the rollout is slow enough that strains don't change much.

Most of the commercial growers that I've come across on instagram that appear to be doing very well breed their own genetics and I've seen a LOT of in-house, relentless, archiveseed bank, compound genetics. Granted, sampling solely from IG is flawed logic - I quite like your idea about the top rated dispensaries and will give it a go.

My other worry initially was that these breeders were just hype companies and I didn't want to spend a huge amount of money on them to find out they were half decent (I guess if a lot of commercial people are growing them it can't be that bad).

I must say it... Most bigger farms have a system where they have several different rooms or facilities. They find strains that fit their growing environment. If it doesn't fit they toss it or throw it in another room to meet what the strain likes. They all have a room that is set aside just to run new gear. I think this route makes the most sense. I wouldn't worry to much about THC numbers as they vary and THC is not all that. Look through grow journals and do your home work. Good Luck!

Hey, thanks for stopping by the thread man! loving the positive comments.

Yes, I've seen quite a few commercial growers mention that they get strains to fit their rooms.

With regards to THC not being all that I wholely agree.

I just wonder how experienced commercial growers go about creating strain curations. That is, with the goal of converting the average smoker who gets their weed from a dealer, if they were to start a brand new company in a brand new market that's never existed what strains would you go for, how many different ones would you grow and why?

Naturally, that is a very multi-faceted question, but I'd love to hear opinions. It seems a lot of other growers in my region (other countries have began legalization of med) started offering an indica, a sativa, a hybrid and a CBD strain. PRetty well-rounded approach but I usually prefer to specialize in things.

If it were me, hypothetically, I would start with easy to grow strains. I would perfect those first then move on to other strains, hence the test room. Your always going to have "NEW HYPE" strains popping up. Like previous post above look at dispensaries. You will see common strains. That will give you a good idea what works together and go from there. Don't worry about the newest thing on the block. There are classics that are a main stay for a reason.
