Coloration of plants

I've heard in many instances on this forum of various ways to color your plants. I understand this has ZERO effect in boosting potency of the finished product. Everybody on here that says they will update with the results of trying to color their plants but they never did. I want to know has anybody ever tried:

-reducing nighttime temps during flowering to change color?

-Adding food coloring or sugar free kool aid to a hydroponic resirvor to color?

Any other methods that worked?

People always ask why one would want to color their plants with no increase in potency, for me the answer is simple;

cultivation has become a passion in itself to me, more so than toking. I want to try something new and exciting.
With my existing clones rather than purchase a different strain of seeds. Someone tell me if there is a working method to make your bud turn funky colors without buying some other strain off the net.

I would imagine the food coloring thing would work. I've seen florists turn white carnations green to an extent by adding green food coloring. They can also do it with blue, pink, red, and sometimes can even mix them where they're do pink and then a kind of orange/peach. If the plants are taking up water they've got to take up the coloring that is mixed in too, right?

Try it with one of your plants and post the results.

I think it might work, and tbh might look really cool... :eyesmoke:
Although it prob will have a negative effect on flavor, and if you flush before harvest you might flush out all the pigments.... Good luck! and make sure that stuff is safe for ya!

Oh and i hear lowering grow room temps works, like 10 deg under ur normal conditions? there was a thread about it on here somwhere, possibly the advanced sect. Dont take my word on it since ive never tried it (i have a hard time keeping temps under 85 let alone changing them on command!)

I dumped 6 packets of kool aid singles into one of my 5G DWC's. Just enough to give the water a purple tint. One thing I've learned in growing: introduce things to your crop in moderation. The bubble stone should be enough to keep the mixture suspended long enough for root absorption. If it absorbs or dissolves with no effect I will change the water, flush for a few days and try it with more. 1 Kool aid single packet is only intended for 8 oz of water so this will probably not have much or any effect. On the flipside it won't do any harm either. I'll keep you posted and I will probably post pics soon. Right now I've got 2 5 gal DWC systems each look great and a 16 site cloner that I just started 7 cuttings in (all built with supplies from your neighborhood friendly wal-mart:-).

I think it would look cool too! Others who started similar threads were judged very harshly by other posters for such an oddity. I just want to make something that looks cool :-P

If I successfully make it purple I will just be basting it in BHO and making purple honey bud. That being said the BHO will help to offset any unpleasant change in taste to the bud itself

You can buy FDA approved dyes that are concentrated in gourmet food stores and some large craft shops likely on eBay also. They would be the concentrated dyes used by manafactures without any flavorings, sugars etc like used Koolaid.

The blue coloration that comes natural to some of the mainly indica crosses is typically caused by night time temperature drops of usually 20 degrees or more. Sometimes more drop isuch as if the day time temps are higher than around 80 degrees.

***UPDATE***

Did kool-aid for a week in one reservoir, It yielded no results in color change. In addition the Kool-aid caked to the roots of the plants quadrupling the mass of the root system. I did not take a picture but it was badly messed up and the roots went from white to yellow very quickly.

To solve this problem we whipped up a much smaller temporary dwc out of a 2 liter apple juice bottle, and added a second bubble stone. The force and close range of the bubbles to the root system gently bubbled away the unsightly gunk that had overtaken the root system. after a day of this remedy (changed water 3 times) the plant was back to normal and looking great. The root yellow has disappeared along with the residue. To be honest the roots looked better than they did before, but i would not attest this to the addition of kool-aid in our reservoir.

The only problem you might experience with the food dye is its effect on the nutrient pH as most food dyes are now all man made not natural plant based etc. so the pH could be about anywhere on the scale.

this is the deal... rite after you cut, put it in a cup of food coloroing and let it sit for 24 hours... roots disapate the dye before it even gets to the plant... so there is no reason to put it in your res nor add it to your watering (for soil growers)... it will make your plant taste harsh... i read a thread about it on icmag i believe.. the dude said his weed tasted like shit after.. the only thing i am not sure of is if you leave the lights on or off for the 24 hours... try it with some celery first and see what works best... hopes this helps...

To make them turn gold, AKA Acapulco gold the trick used by the columbian farmers was to girdle the stem,
this involved making cuts that were 1/8" deep 360 degrees around the stem and then again 1/4" above/below the first cut. Then carefully dig out the veg between the cuts to 1/8" deep, allow to heal and walla Gold Bud:bigjoint:

If your your about to harvest, add methylene blue to your nutrients to get blue buds. Available at tropical fish stores. It is uses for various medical reasons and is injected. It is used for labortaory use for a dye in slide staining. It is used for aquarium use to kill fungus infections.

lowering grow room temps will usually change the plant/buds to a PURPLE color as it will also do if temps outside are
cold enough. indoor growers sometimes water with ice water to achieve this purple coloring effect.
