Cleaning Hydroton

Hey does anybody have any tips on how to remove plant debris from hydroton quickly and efficiently? I am pretty tired of doing it the old fashioned way. Any help will be appreciated.

Like I said, I was tired doing it old fashioned way.

It's a shame both the plant material and the damn balls float...

buy some window screen material, cut some squares with a slit to the center from one side (like an ezclone neoprene, but square), then slide the slits around the trees.

then when u want to remove the leaves, blow them off the top of the screen.

panda film works fine too, but u cant see thru it for algae and aphids and shit like that.

Actually, I already use panda film. It definitely keeps the leaves out, also algae is never a problem because light never reaches the rocks. I always check for bugs when I lift the tarp to water. An added bonus too is the extra light that gets bounced back.

It's more little roots, but there are some leaves from when I was less than careful.

Check either your hardware store or Farm supply, they should have thin mesh chicken wire. 1/4-1/3" Mesh works perfect when you can find it.
